I think I killed my TA61 today.

I was about 20 minutes off from a Supercharged 06 GTO kill and had just horse sneezed (I do this too much in spite of knowing its not good for the turbo) at a Mustang as I passed it.
In the rear view saw a puff of smoke.

After that, under light/normal acceleration, the car felt underpowered and the turbo (I think it was the turbo) sounded more like a super charger than a turbo as it spooled.

Did I kill it?
How to check?

tim, pull the inlet pipe off and take a look.

See if the blades are there check shaft play. if nothing pull exhaust side and take a look

also if you find blades missing make sure you get the pieces out of the intercooler. good luck and let us know what turbo you are looking at getting. there is some nice stuff out there now and will make power on lower boost then your current turbo. might look into the billet 6265 for your setup :) or the 6152 will work well to

If it's turbo time, I'll change to something newer/better that is still a straight forward bolt on using OE headers, brackets, oil feed and drain....so it stays semi "stock appearing" and hopefully still fits under a slightly modded heat shield;)

Do the Gt6152, and 6265 fit that bill?
I also have a line on a new custom built T66 for a reasonable sum, and know of a couple guys with similar combo's to mine who have been happy sporting around with a PTE 61.
Any thoughts?

When part of a gasket flew through my exhaust side, it chewed up the insides of all the blades. Only could make 5 psi after that and sounded like a fire engine....

Sounds about like the sound I am hearing...

As soon as I heard it start whining away, I let off and started looking around for that Supercharged GTO I killed 20 minutes earlier cuz I thought I was hearing a blower.

I kept the foot out of it the rest of the way home as I processed visions of compressor or turbine blades coming loose and causing carnage.

If the tone has dramatically changed, I would definitely suspect some damage has occured.
But here is what I would suggest for a replacement.

Here is a Air Cooled dual ball bearing 6265 with an E cover sitting next to a TE-44 that Rick Hunt installed on his car back in March.

With the heat shield installed, you can not tell the difference.

I would highly recommend this turbo, but I would spec a S ported shroud compressor cover for your combo. 4" inlet, 2.5" discharge on this style compressor cover. Seeing that you like to snort the turbo, this ported shroud will dramatically increase the life span of the turbo.
Here is what the SP cover looks like.

Definitely go ball bearing if you can, from a longevity standpoint it will be money well spent.
And I'd keep the .63 A/R housing on this turbo as well.
Coupled with a Heavy duty actuator you will have a lot of fun on the street.
Hope this helps.

Oh snap did not know the horse sneeze was bad for the turbo. It's sounds so cool!

Thanks Patrick.
Yup.... definitely knocked the turbo out.
I pulled the inlet bell off tonight and the shaft will move side to side (wobble) about 1/16".
The compressor fins are in tact, but they do appear to just barely contact the housing.

I like the suggestion you make above....but it sounds expensive and I'm a tad broke after blowing all my parts money on repairing my PowerMaster and upgrading my front brakes these last few weeks....and I still have to recarpet a 2800 sqft house and pay property taxes before Christmas....

Don't suppose you have any good used ones fitting that description for sale to a poor man...do ya;)

Question....I'm supposed to attend a church car show on Sunday...it's about 2 miles away...if I nurse it over there....am I gonna be safe?

tim, 1/16" of play doesn't sound bad at all. pull the DP and take a look? sure you dont have a hole in the intercooler hoses?

not sure how hard you are pushing on the shaft to get it to touch. anyways keep us posted

Approx. 1/16" from center so almost an 1/8" total.... It wobbles pretty easy.
I checked the exhaust side and a couple blades on the turbine wheel are missing some chunks...

^ sounds good, well bad but ok. good luck on your new turbo choice.

whatcha gonna do with your old core TA61?

A.j.

I bought it used form Spoolfool2 almost 2 years back to replace my stocker that had blown seals. It's a John Craig (Precision) built TA61 and is definitely a strong core....other than the turbine getting damaged.

If I can't use it as a trade in core to Precision for a new turbo...It'll prolly go up for sale and I'll be handing the cash to my beautiful wife so she can go buy something pretty since I got to buy something pretty....

I kinda love her and want to keep her around...so it's just smart to keep the peace.

Turbine wheel missing some chunks = severe imbalance about to occur if you keep running it. You have a spoonless grenade with the pin pulled in your hand right now. No idea when it's gonna go BOOM. It's definitely on it's way out. Also, the more you run it, in it's current condition, the more fine metal particles will grind their way off the compressor wheel and be blown through your intercooler directly into your motor. If you're lucky, the intercooler might catch most of the pieces, but it's the fine particles pieces that will eventually make their way straight to your bearings in the motor. I've seen more spun bearings in motors caused by this over the years than blown head gaskets.

I would advise not running it further. Also, if you still have the factory oil cooler in the stock radiator I would discontinue using it by either removing the sandwich adapter and plugging the lines, or install a new oil cooler in place of the radiators cooler. And flush that intercooler thoroughly before running it again. Unfortunately we have nothing used for sale.
Hope this helps.

Hmm........ well keep me in mind if you need to unload it.
