Yes I could Google it but Google won't have any interesting conversation about personal experiences with them. So I guess I'm asking for any interesting stories about early fuel injected cars/trucks as well. I've only ever delt with carbs on lawnmowers and pressure washers so ALL my car stories involve fuel injected cars.

Don't know about the oldest car, but they were using it in WW2. That's where Hilborn got his experience.

Already some interesting stuff. I didn't know the corvette was fuel injected in 1961. I'm assuming it was WW2 aircraft that was fuel injected?

I always thought mechanical fuel injection was a carberator LOL. So would there be a belt driven system for mechanical fuel injection?

The Corvette had Fuel Injection available in 1957.

mechanical injection setups in cars go back to just after WW2.. Chevrolet had it as an option on the 283 in the 57 Bel Air.

there was one luxury car that had multipoint efi in the late 50's, but i can't remember what it was at the moment.
Cosworth Vegas had modern efi in 1976.. those cars were badass and are worth some coin today.
i had a 78 or 79 Caddy Deville that had multipoint efi on it, which surprised me the first time i popped the hood. i'm thinking it had a 425 in it.

The early 50's had the Pontiac Bonneville Star Chief as a high performance fuel injected vehicle, if highly optioned these cars were right at or above Cadillac prices.

Hilborn sold mechanical stuff pretty early on but that was aftermarket.
The 57 chevys were mechanical injection like the hilborn stuff. My grandfather worked at the Janesville plant and said he worked on more than one to get it started to drive it off the line(though he did that for a lot of cars).

I can just imagine the mechanics back then saying Why the F didn't they just use a carb!!!

My wife has a 72 VW Bus that came here with EFI.

I believe the 72 VW Bus actually came with a 1700 type 4 (Pancake) motor with duel Solex carbs. The mechanical fuel injection didn't show up until about 74.

I've owned two of them. Which is quite ironic when you think about it. I can actually say that I own one of the quickest production cars made in this country, and the slowest production car (van) ever brought into this country.

If you think the old bus is slow, try driving it after flogging the GN for the day. :arghh: The good news is, when you've been driving the Bavarian death box for the afternoon, then slip into the ten second Turbo Buick.:jawdrop: :D

I stand corrected. For some reason this one has a single 2bbl weber. It has a large plug of some sort back with the engine and an old skool VW guy told me it was originally EFI.

Great info guys. I had no idea that fuel injection was employed that long ago. 1950's and even in ye' old Stanley Steamer....wow.
