Aluminum Bumper Braces

"This explains why approximately half of all the 1987 Grand Nationals have a limited slip rear end". Kirbans Guide to 1986 and 1987 Turbo Regals, page 71.

My 1986 peg leg GN had steel wheels and steel drums.

But has lightweight aluminum front (VD6) and rear (VD7) bumper braces.

I thought there was a non-G 80 / aluminum bumper brace connection with the GN's for 86, not a aluminum drum connection.

My 87's were G80's but the 86 was a peg leg...

I'm going to guess that more of the 84-85 cars lacked posi. I've got nothing to back that up except they were more under the radar, less horsepower, maybe more people bought them thinking less about their potential than when the magazines were doing more articles on them in 86-87 as the second coming.

I've had 3 1984 Ttypes and all were peg leg G87's and 1 1984 GN that is a G80 Posi. I much perfer the posi. even in a weak old hot air:D

My 86 GN had a peg leg rear, aluminum drums and bumper supports, as well as no power options on the interior... The way I understood it was, if you did not order the G80 you got the aluminum drums in 1986.

The general rule of thumb as far as aluminum drums go is that if it has alloy wheels and no posi than it got the aluminum drums. Always steel drums with the G80 option. I'll have to look back through my label collection but I think it's impossible for any 86-87 steel wheel GN to have rolled off the line with the aluminum drums. I'm not saying impossible but if somebody wants to post a pic of their SPID label that shows RPO code J42 and the N83 chrome steel wheel without the G80 posi code than I'll stand corrected.

Eric,

Both of my 86 GN's came with aluminum drums, no posi units and steel GN wheels. Here is a pic of the SPID from GN #1.

Out of the 6 TR's I have had, 5 were hotairs and non had factory posi. My 87 has posi from factory.

My 87 GN came with no posi and aluminum drums. I have owned it since Aug. of 1988. Was stock condition when I got it. Of course it has a posi now!

Thanks for the pic of your SPID label Paul. It's always nice when someone backs up the facts with a pic or two.

No connection between aluminum bumper reinforcements and posi or aluminum drums. All 84-86 GNs got the aluminum bumper supports and all 87 GNs got the steels. No ifs and or buts. That is fact. Now I wish I could find out way that was. It has something to do with the governments CAFE figures. All I know is 1987 was the first year of a big change which is why the steel wheel, steel bumper support 1987 GN was the heaviest TR model to date. It also has something to do with the advent of the WE4 Turbo T and why it was such a poor seller.....compared to the 87 GN.

My 86 GN has the G80 option on the RPO sticker, but someone pulled the posi and replaced it with a pegleg... My Turbo-T does not have the G80 option, but has an Eaton that was added later... ironic huh...

Eric,

No problem, if my other car was at home I would post a picture of it's SPID as well. Hopefully in the spring I will have the car back. :)

My 84 T was a one wheel wonder. I cant remember what my 85 had as I broke it and got rid of it a couple of weeks after I bought it. My 87 is a G80 car though.

Besides the extra cost, why were the cars not offered/built with the posi and the aluminum parts?

84GN with Posi, steel drums
parted out a 87 T Type in 2006 with posi, steel drums

My 86 had no posi per the spid has an eaton in it now and alumninum drums
