What is the procedure for cutting open an oil filter? I just removed the filter and I want to inspect for any particles that may or may not be present. I do not have a special tool for cutting the filter so other than that how would you do it. Thanks

I've done it with a regular can opener (ok, a pretty stiff one :-)). With the filter standing gasket end up you would use the opener on the top if it were a can. Turn the opener sideways so the wheel cuts around the outside just below the thick disk that threads on the engine. Cheap can openers are under $4 if you don't want to ruin your "good" one. I like this way because there are no chips to confuse things. I bet one of those exhaust pipe chain cutters would do the job, too, or if you have a tubing cutter that big.

Knock a hole in the side, next to the o'ring end crimp.
Then, use a pair of tin snips.
That way, the interior is not contaminated, as it would if a hacksaw were used.
Once the cartridge is out, I cut the ends loose with a razor knife, and then open the pleats.
After the initial look, I hang the matl up, and let the excess oil drain from it. That way, U can easily see any small particles left.
I also look at the remaining oil in the bottom of the can, once the element is out.... Gets interesting, some times!!

The "best" way to open up an oil filter is with one of these: http://www.tavia.com/08340.jpg I personally use a sharp putty knife and hold the filter in a vise and tap the putty knife with a hammer all the way around, just below the filter base. Works great and only costs a few bucks.
