My new "bulletproof" $1200 200-4R lasted a mere 8 miles before a loud chattering noise developed up toward the front of the tranny, I then lost the speedometer gear, and there was fluid everywhere. The pressures and temps were good in the garage but, since I had unhooked the gauges prior to the test drive, I don't know what they were at the time of failure. Tranny shifted fine up to speed and never saw more than 2500rpm [breaking in new engine!].

I pulled the tranny out today and the only thing I can see wrong is that the front seal literally came out with the torque converter [explains the fluid loss!] and, of course the plastic speedo gear is toast and so is the plastic governor gear too. Not hardly any metal in the pan though it only went 8 miles and the fluid looked OK. Warranty means shipping expense back to the supplier and hoping they don't weasel out of it on some technicality.

Question: Could the front seal popping out and subsequent fluid loss some how cause those plastic gears to destruct? In other words, could it be as simple as replacing that seal, governor gear, and speedo gear, put it back in and check out the pressures and temp again or play it safe and shell out the shipping bucks back to the supplier so they can tell me why they're not going to honor their warranty?

I don't know about you guys but my past experience with transmission shops doing the work right and honoring warranties hasn't been good. Thanks.

im certanlly not a pro with transmissions but i went through a ton of them with my turbo t. if the. front seal is pushed out or damaged there is some kind of problem going on.ive had front seal problems in the past and it was never as simple as replacing it.here is a tttttt for you.

Location

Wichita, Ks.

Something peculiar. It didn't dawn on me before but my stock 200-4R has a metal snap ring holding the front seal in and this one does not. Could it be that simple? They left off the snap ring?

modifications to the pump body and cover that can be done at home with a drill can eliminate this.excessive convertor drainback is the main cause and right behind it is a warped pump body caused by overheating .

Another question

Chris, if you're still out there, I'm trying to understand how this brand new tranny managed to overheat to the point of warping the pump in less than 8 miles on a 65 degree day never seeing more than 2500rpm. Is that really possible? After setting initial timing, some minor carb tweaks, and a 20 minute camshaft break-in in the garage [probably 30 minutes total] I took min/max TV pressure and temp numbers on the tranny and it wasn't remotely too hot. Wouldn't something have had to go terribly wrong in this tranny to cause a sudden overheat? Just trying to learn here, Chris! Thanks for the input.
