I ran a PT54 with a 2800 stall 12" d5 for a couple of years, and it was laggy. Launching with less than 4 psi, the boost wouldn't pass 10 psi until about 30 feet out then it would flash on up to 22-24 psi, just before the 1-2 shift. My brakes would hold about 7 psi boost but the nitto drag radials wouldn't and I never tried with slicks. The PT61 is available with three different turbine wheels. You can get the GT350 76 trim so it is comparable to a PT52, the to4e 69 trim so it is comparable to a PT54, or a to4e P trim so it is comparable to a TE62. In each case the GT61 compressor wheel should spool a little quicker than the 60-1 in each of the old turbos. Personally I would recommend the P trim for the most power, and step up to a 9/11 3000 stall converter. I don't think you will be happy with the P trim and a 2800 stall, but you might be okay with the 69 trim or if you really want spoolup and don't want to change converters get the GT350 turbine.
