big stuff 3 after start help

[86 got boost]

When started first thing, she revs to about 2200 to 2700 RPM at the highest then goes back to idle.
I dont like dropping into gear like that, but I also dont want to ruin a new motor, so if any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...
when cold revs much higher, also does it hot but only to 2000 RPM
