I'm going to replace my PM unit. I know it calls for strictly DOT 3 brake fluid. I have Castrol GT LMA fluid available to me here at work, to save me time and a trip to the parts store later.

It says DOT 3 / DOT 4, "Exceeds" both standards. Is this ok to use in this system? Also says "Ideal for ABS" which is why I'm asking if its alright.

Should I hunt down strictly DOT 3?

TIA

It's fine to use. Brake fluid ratings, as the number increases, so does the wet boiling point. Dot 5 is silicone. Dot 3 & 4 can be mixed with each other - Dot 5 can't be mixed with either 3 or 4.

i could be very wrong on this but with the high number brake fulid, isnt the oxidation rate different?

i read that in passing a while ago so forgive me if i am wrong or off.

Ok. I'll go ahead and use the LMA.

Thanks much for the feedback guys!

That will be fine. The main thing you want to consider is a fluid that is packaged properly. If a fluid is packaged in a plastic bottle it is good to look for packaging dates. Keep in mind that plastic induces moisture, and can alter boiling points. The best bet is to purchase fluid in metal cans.

Dot 3 or 4 is fine, I would stay away from silicon based fluids.

As far as I remember, DOT 4 [ie Volvo] and DOT 3 do NOT mix at all. If your fluid exceeds these standards [boiling point] then use with confidence. You are not mixing 2 different types of BF together.

The Castrol fluid is DOT 3 and 4 combined.

I might just pick up another big bottle of Prestone DOT 3 tomorrow. I have to go to the parts store AGAIN anyway, since I broke my freakin tubing cutter.
