No doubt that building a fast car is expensive, but thanks for the confirmation. Looking for a bit more constructive input then that.

Building that fast of a car is the easy part, however making it last for longer than one or two passes is the hard part, and that is what separates the cheap from the expensive. This was an old build, it's Marty Stromberger's old nine second Trans Am that he built for very cheap, and he essentially succeeded. The build had one of the largest followings over on theturboforums. Everybody agrees though, the engine wouldn't have lasted too much longer than it did had he stood with it...

And:

$1000 for the right converter
$1000 for tuning
$1500 in fuel system and plumbing
$500 for a new k-member or refab the mounts on the existing k-member
Etc.

It won't take long to hit $30k with that setup also. The buick is cooler. I had a 800hp twin turbo mod motor mustang and I sold it, now I'm building a buick.

You LIKE punishment?....Buick better looking and an Icon, but Ford capable of much more HP for far less...IMHO.

While I understand a lot of the points being made in this thread about the costs of going that fast in a Buick, I find it hard to believe that you can't run 9's for under $30k. I'm not necessarily building mine for the track, but it will be 9 sec. capable AND SAFE for less than that. A lot of this has to do with who you know, and how resourceful you are. To make a long story short, I had no choice but to go the Ls swap route. In my honest opinion, that's savings right there. From my readings, stock 109 blocks get a little "sketchy" at 600hp+. STOCK Ls blocks have reached power levels nearly triple that. The badass v6 3.8's in these cars is what made me love them so much, but there's not a single person here that can deny that it's far easier and cheaper to take an Ls motor to 800hp.

You can run 9's for less than 30K, the catch is how many times you can do it before you go boom.;)

Im headed for over 25k by time I'm done. I'm in the middle of a big HP stroker right now.
Rough example... Mine in BOLD
249 stroker long block...$9500 ( Best of everything) I was closer to $7500.00
67HPQ turbo...$1500 HP71 Billet wheel $1200.00
Intercooler...$1000 GN1 $660.00
PTC convertor...$950 Used Bradco $600.00
Billet tranny...$2500-3000 Built by Steve and I $600.00
Good rear end...$2000-2500 Moser parts Spool.cclip axles $1600.00
FAST XFI...$2000 Stock computer modded maxeffort $800.00
and then about another $7500-8500 in Misc. At least $8000.00

These are actual prices, not ball parks.
Also...I started with a 14k mile GN, so the car didnt need much work, but cost me $15K

My car is probably the roughest cheapest 9 second 109 car out there. However it is not certified .It needs an upgrade to the roll bar.
I run 25 PSI and 24 degrees timing .My main goal is to just have fun now and not wrench on it to much.I run TSM at the buick events even though Im not competitive .Im good with the car the way it is
You are much better off buying a built car than starting over
Sams is for sale now for 17K .I know Larry Gables aluminum block car sold way to cheap R.I.P
Also Phil Mcgloins car sold Cheap

Oops...I'll be close 30k. I forgot the ported heads and rockers...plus I just got a new exhaust.
I am selling a lot of parts off my current combo so I will actually be less, but OP was asking as if he had nothing to start with.

JI have $60k into my stage two car and will never do it again. It's a pain in the a$$. Aftermarket parts never seem to work right and cost is obnoxious. It's been five years of building and I still can't drive the car because I can't get the XFI tuned right. Everytime u look at the car, its two grand then when you get the two grand in parts, you have to sell them for $1000 cause they didn't work with your set up. Then u spend another $3k to get it right but it still needs to be modified to work costing another $500. Etc etc etc.

Keep it simple and enjoy the car otherwise you'll grow to hate it and it'll just sit in the garage like mine do.
Ain't that the truth!

HOPEFULLY mine lives in the 9 sec. world for quite a while. Mine won't be at the track too often, though. Maybe that will be the difference. And I really won't have a whole lot invested into this build in relation to what it WILL be capable of. Like I said before, it's all about who you know and how resourceful you are.

You always throw the good ones away Charlie!!

My build matches yours - pretty much dollar for dollar - plus another grand for FAST Dash Data Logger - of course there is always more I want! LOL
Too much is never enough!

Aah man...I want one of those!!!

Learn to know when enough is enough. I have had my car from when it was stock and then started to dick around with it. As Razor said, the need for speed never ends when you get a taste of it at the track and are always setting new goals for the car in chase of that elusive time slip. I have played that game ever since I have owned my car. Every year it seems that last year was never good enough and I can better my times. Although I trailer my car to the track, its not a trailer queen. The most important thing to put in front of your quest for speed is, what is your main intention with this car? do you want to street drive it, is it a track car only, or do you want to have the best of both worlds. There is a cut off....... I have found that cut off and will not go further because my main intention is to street drive the car. It is a buyers market right now. You can buy motors, transmissions, ecu's etc at very affordable prices in the parts section of this board and easily build your dream car for a fraction of the cost. The faster you go, the smaller your target audience is for selling your stuff. That's how you can obtain your goals in building your car. Cash is king.
