Once rod side clearance is greater than .001" (pretty much all engines), it has no bearing on oil control. Once the side gap exceeds the curtain area it has no chance to hold back hemorrhaging oil. Our engines run such small clearances that side gap has no bearing on the hydrodynamic wedge.
 
I don't remember. It was a stock turbo crank on stock reconditioned rods.

I tend to agree with Earl on side clearance of rods.
