After getting my tranny rebuilt again I was told why my shifter cable keeps breaking. The guy said he hears a sound in the steering column when trying to put the car in Park. He said the rod that connects to the ignition switch to allow it to lock and unlock may be binding or bent. How do you remove this rod and can you remove it for good or must it be installed? I will try to cut that ugly column guard off tomorrow and figured I'd try to tackle this problem at the same time. Thanks.

Will unbolting this rod from the shifter linkage cause any problems? Is it neccessary to have on there? I was told the rod was adjusted but the noise is still heard when going through the gears with the shifter.

Hey bud

Bring it out here and let my guys check it. I will be glad too. Is it just a noise or you think causing some of your tranny problems. It may be the 85 thing going on too. May be the entry point for rod is longer or shorter than with the 86/87? I may would post in Trans forum maybe they can help.

I believe all the 84-87s had the same parts as far as linkage is concerned. There were a few differences in the trannies but I just had some of that taken care of. I now only need a performance valve body installed. I had a 200 servo put in and a complete rebuild on friday. It shifts nicely but a performance valve body would certainly make chirp shifts like I want. I was just concerned the rod was binding and causing the cable to break. I was thinking of just unhooking it but wasn't sure if it was needed or not. If another cable breaks I will unhook it. I took part of the steering column guard off because I thought it may have something to do with the binding. I took off the piece that wraps around the part of the steering column that turns when you move the shifter. I need to send my 85 valve body off to get checked by one of the board vendors. Maybe they can get the stacked shift out. There was a big difference in shift feel when my 85 body was taken out and the normal 200-4r body was installed. It was very noticably different. The guy with the 85 GN up the road from me has a few problems that I've been trying to help him with. They seem to be minor but since the Scanmaster won't work on the 85 and Turbolink will only do so much it's kind of hard to narrow down the problem. My main concern now is to get that downpipe off and send it back to ATR to get repaired.

Bring it by

We have a moveable lift, looking a REAL one NOW, but I think we can probably get off. Shoot me an e-mail.

If you have some time Saturday let me know. I get off work around 12:30. Maybe you can head down to the drag strip with me Thursday night. It's test and tune night down in New Bern.
