A friend I work with just bought a Dayton electric heater from Grainger (around $530). You will have to wire it for 240 volts. I think it would be great for ocational usage. Of couse an insulated garage and garage door would be helpful. Just flip on a switch and heat up the garage. No fuel or open flames to deal with. But, for extended usage or trying to use it all winter you might have to put roller bearings in you electric meter or you may smoke it. Hopefully, in another month we will start having some decent temps.

I have a 40 x 40 cinder block garage..my 70,000 BTU torpedo heater works great...can work in a t-shirt....only draw back is it is noisy...I have an 80,000 btu propane heater to in stall.....i stay away from gas station kerosene and get it from my local oil place...that way I know it is pure....my kerosene heater in basement would always coke the wick with the gas station stuff...again each supplier is different and this station was a no-name location and was pumped thru regular gas pump

well, I am not the only one with this problem:biggrin: . My wife fixed this problem for me by going to menards and picking up a remington ( i think)
115k BTU kerosene heater. burns 1+2 diesel also. It's got a built in Tstat, low 02 shutoff, low fuel shutoff. WOrks awesome and havent got a headache of diesel. I think I usually use #2, can't remember but I switched from one diesel to the other and it was night and day difference. I got a 2+stall garage so its good size. about as big as my house:rolleyes: . Heats up toasty in 30 min and is workable in about 10 minutes. I like it toasty:biggrin: . So there ya go, drop about <300 bucks for one and crack some beers with the buddies when its below 0 like it is here right now. Oh, an d it has a fuel guage too:cool:

I have a 25 x 25 garage (in round numbers) and a 30,000 BTU ventless, wall mounted heater. It gets freakin' hot in the garage at about half throttle. My garage is drywalled and well insulated and touches the house on 3 sides (left, rear and ceiling). Without heat, it rarely gets below 50 degrees even when it's single-digits outside so the heater doesn't have a lot of work to do.

This is like the one I have:
ProCom Vent-Free Natural Gas 30,000 BTU Garage Heater, Model# MN300HGB | Heaters | Northern Tool + Equipment

I think I paid about the same for it ($100) a few years ago. It does have an open flame, but it's tough to get around that in a cheap heater. I'm just careful when working with fumes. I'll heat up the garage and shut it off before opening up any fuel lines or painting. The insulation in the garage keeps it comfortable for a while.

I find a small propane heater works just fine. Mine hooks up to a gas grill tank and plugs into 110 to power the fan. It sits low to the ground and heats up the concrete floor in a few minutes. I've found if you heat up the concrete enough, you can shut off the heater and use the radiant heat from the floor. Concrete will hold heat for a long time if your garage is insulated. You might have tofire up the heater every hour or so for a few minutes to keep it comfortable.

How cold does it get there? I got one of those heaters. Only thing it did was give me a headache. I can't even give the thing away. Good thing I didn't pay for it.

Wow, how do you really feel about it. I'm not saying it's the best thing since the wheel but I believe he was looking originally for a way to heat up his garage on a budget. I've got other heaters that put out more heat, but they are also more costly and burn much more fuel. I've never had issues with the fumes with my little propane heater.

My friend also has both and has tried his propane in his very cluttered 2 car garage, he wasn't pleased wtih it either. Really he doesnt need a huge heater like I have. A 60k heater would probably do the job. I got the bigger one because I have yet to finish the ceiling in my garage and I cannot work when I'm cold.
