Did anyone else notice the re-paint on GNX001 at the Buick Horsepower Nats? Last time I saw the car was at BG in 01, so I was checking it out at IRP. There is dust all over it, it looks as if the fender vents were left in when painted because the paint is chipping/peeling around the edges. I figured with a car of that caliber that Buick would up for an expensive paint job.

A lot of that car is not 100% stock. I'm surprised.

If I am not mistaken 001 was stolen and then recovered. That may be the reason for it not being 100% factory original. Regardless it was the beginning of the end.

Was it stolen from Buick, or ? I was under the impression that they had held onto that one from the beginning.

I noticed the repaint too. At least I was pretty sure it was repainted. My friends said I was crazy for thinking that.

The "story" is that it was stolen from G.M. The car has been in their possesion since day 1 so it probably has never even been titled. I remember hearing years ago that it was stolen and recovered . I am sure someone here has more facts on this, if in fact it is true.

I used to paint so I pick up on that stuff pretty quickly. I'm ruined on car shows now.

Main thing that caught my eye was how flat the paint was. I figured it was just sanded and buffed but then started seeing dust and sanding scratches. I was guessing it got little scratches and bumps along the way going to shows, people touching it, etc. The "theft recovery" is an interesting story.

I've always assumed that the stolen GNX was an unnumbered prototype.
#1 is exactly that. The first production GNX. IIRC the motor from one of those proto GNX's was dropped into the Estate wagon that was at the 90 GeSCA nationals. It was complete with tacky woodgrain and could run the 1/4 in the 13's.

And least we forget that GM's build quality was really crappy, especially in the area of paint and the GNX was no exception. Maybe the 20 year old stuff is starting to take on that antique patina.

I have a friend that showed me pictures of GNX #001 from a GM wharehouse in Michigan. Is this the same GNX we are talking about? It was explained to me that only GM representatives could visit this wharehouse. My friend is the only public owner of 1 of 6 Fiero Pace Car prototypes. He is very reputable. I have a few pictures somewhere of the car in the wharehouse. It is there along with many VERY rare vehicles and is dirty. He took the pictures this past winter. -----Jeremy

You know I do remember hearing a story about the prototype being stolen and found in Detroit?

Kirban DVD of the 25th GS Nationals. Shows 001, Dennis said the paint is perfect (2005), as is the interior. He made one good point about 001. It's the first so it will differ from the other 546. Don't know if that means it is different not stolen and missing parts. Just my .02cents.

OK, so if it was crushed, how does it have perfect paint? How did my buddy have pictures of it in the GM wharehouse? Who owns the car? I guess I'm a little confused here! Was a GNX prototype numbered #001? Just seems to be a couple too many number #001's in my figuring!

I seen 001 at the Nats, the Buick rep did say the car had been repainted. He mensioned that since they take the GNX to shows, the car did get scratchs on it so they repainted it. I did see flaws in the paint work but it still looked nice.

Guys i dont know if its the same one but 001 is in a Museum here in MI i have personally seen it. i have picture of it in the museum i dont know if anyone else has seen it. I see you guys saying that you seen it at another car show i dont knwo if they take it places i thought it was just kept in there all the time. its in the Sloan Museum in Flint, MI i know for the Sloan car show it has been taking out and put in the show a few different times i just never knew they took it out of state or anything.

GNX #1 is in the Heritage Collection but it does get out now and again. I have seen it at Norwalk and Milan dragway and for 3 of the last 5 "Flings" GM was kind enough to send it to my car gathering.

Even if it has been repainted it is still very nice looking.

The first prototype GNX was stolen, the crushed (as is the case with most if not all prototypes)

The first production GNX (GNX001) is in the museum but has travelled to many Buick events over the years.

OK this is the one that I was talking about! Another interesting thing about GM's prototypes is that my friend with the Fiero Prototype got his from an Automotive school. GM donated many of their prototypes for educational purposes and the cars were supposed to be crushed after the schools were done with them. My friend got his because he knew this school had it. When he arrived to pick it up, it was under a tree covered in crud and tree sap. GM had to write the car off to my buddy, hence, he is the only public owner of the 6 prototypes left. GM has the other 5!
