I was cleaning the impeller on my stocker turbo and noticed
some play when I grab it with my fingers and move it from
side to side, it has no play moving in and out though.
I think there has always been some side to side movement
since day one, but it seems like it may be getting worse now.
The blades all look fine and there are no marks in the housing,
so it's not hitting yet, but it's close enough to raise my concern.
Is there a spec for impeller play? I can check it with a dial indicator
next week.
Maybe it's time to freshen up the old whistle.
Any opinions?
btw: I change the oil and filter every 1000 miles so it's pretty
clean inside and not neglected.

if no end to end play and the blades dont touch the housing when pushed to the side it should be good for a while..

once oil pressure hits the bearings it will center the wheels

The way it was told to me is side to side play is normal, but you don't want any in and out play. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

That is absolutely correct. I will say this though. While i have my motor apart i took my turbo to my local turbo guy and had him check the exhaust side for seaping ( i was getting a slight whisp of blue smoke at idle on a brand new motor. Sure enough when he inspected it it was seeping oil on exhausts side. He installed a new ring and i am good to go.
