Is there somebody here using a Hughes converter (either 200-4R or TH400) ? I would've liked to have a little info on them so I can decide which kind I'll go with, ATI, PTC or Hughes. Right now, I've experienced an ATI not in a turbo Buick though...), have mixed feelings about PTC's but cannot compare with Hughes, not having any feedback on them.

Thank you,

Claude.

I had a 10" 3200 non lockup from Hughes and it was ok at first. Worked alright and started spooling slower and slower. When it started making noise, I pulled it and found the hub cracked and almost to the point where it was going to leak. Called and they quoted me more to fix it than to buy another one. Sent it to a converter shop in El Paso, TX and they found all sorts of bent fins in the impellar portion, a stator blade that was broken off and a messed up torrington bearing. THAT shop fixed it and it was WAY better than when I got it new. It is still in the car today as far as I know and the car is in Michigan with Bruce. If I had to do all over again, I would not have bought it. I would have gone with either PTC or Vigilante.

Claude, I have been using a Hughes converter since my car has been in the 9's and it has been awesome!

This is strictly a race unit used with a TH 400 trans. After a few years, I just had it freshened by Hughes after 100's of passes. With our race season just getting under way, i wanted to be sure it would not give me any problems.

With both a full tree and a .4ths pro light I can leave with the best, and have won lots of races with it.

I have also used many PTC converters in customer cars with great success also. Both Dusty and Chris give excellent service, and I recommend them to most of my out of area customers.

It is really difficult to get a race converter "right on" the first time. I worked with Hughes to get mine just where I needed it after a couple stall changes. It was very easy to deal with them in person, with same-day service and no shipping! :D

This is where the experience and knowledge from Chris and Dusty makes them a no. 1 choice for remote customers as their "data bank" covers so many different turbo applications. They are able to get it very close or "right-on" the first time. If not, they do the first re-stall for free, at least last time I checked they did.

I had a 3000rpm lock up with some bolt ons and never had a problem with it. I was going to a bigger turbo when I had jimmy do the trans but popped the engine and never had a chance to realy try it out. This was not a race convertor.

Thanks Nick for your input!...Is your converter is a "spragless" type for TH-400?...I've been told that spragless is better...
Also, I looked at their site and I'm a little confused as which one is best suited for turbo Buicks...They have 8", 9" in "Pro III","Pro IV",and "Pro V" and even "Pro VI" series... What's best?...The higher the series, the better?...Help!, I'm lost!...

thank you,

Claude.

Probably best to call Hughes and talk with Rich or Dave about a turbo converter. They run the converter shop and I deal with both.

Since most of their converters are for a carbed application, the listings are not covered well for boosted applications.

They have done turbo stuff from the '90's starting with Gallina's original GN!

Nick, you've just answered my next question... I was wondering if there was a particular part number to ask for, but after reading your reply, I agree that calling them should definitely help in getting the proper converter for a turbocharged car...
As for the Gallina's car, I didn't know that it was Hughes who made the converters for them...

Thanks again,

Claude.

Notice he said the original GN in the 90's. That's not what's in the car now;)

Mmmm...yeah, I guess you're right!...:redface::biggrin:

By the way, can you tell me what is meant by a "spec by Dusty" converter?...does PTC build them exactly to your specs?... I thought they have a list and you get to choose a converter from it and that 's it...

Thanks,

Claude.

A converter has many different ways of changing it's stall. It's up to the vendor to pick the proper size core, stator design, and fin angles to get the customer something that works. I do spec all my own converters based on my experience with the V6 cars. So something spec'd by me may be different than what you buy directly from the same company. When you call any converter company, someone there will spec your converter. It's just as if I work at PTC but I'm not directly employed by them, although if you asked them they would probably say I do. They call me their traveling salesman.
