So, Saturday I installed Chris's shift kit in my OZ code trans. No problems at all in the process, took me about 4 hours b/c I was takin my time. Installed the kit b/c the shifts were violent at part throttle and very soft at heavier throttle positions. After installation, the trans shifts quite a bit quicker. The part throttle shifts may be a bit harsh, but I like them. The trans even shifts at the factory shift points again.

However, anything over 1/2 throttle, and the shifts get progressively softer. They are significantly faster than before, but still very soft. Only got the car to chirp 2nd on a slick sealcoated surface. Seems like the "best" shifts are about 1/2 throttle, even when playing with the TV settings (I like the shift points, just not the feeling).

So, my question is what to do next... some thoughts I have...

Chris's manual said to drill 4 of the holes in the plate if the car was putting out over 250 hp. Still have the 307 in the car and am not putting out that kind of power. Does drilling the plate make a big difference?

I don't believe that the trans has ever been rebuilt... when installing the kit, I noticed that there was a set of plates above the 3-4 accumulator housing that seemed very loose, you could wiggle them around with your hand significantly. Didnt see those labeled in the CK manual... what are they for and is being that loose a problem? Here is a picture of them so you can see what I am referring to, off to the upper right...

I could venture a guess that all the friction internals of the trans have seen better days (lots of junk in the filter and pan), and it could be why the shift kit didn't fix the problem all the way. The trans also has a nasty clang going into forward gear... reverse has a softer thunk.

Lastly, will a regular 200 tranny servo help out a lot? I really want a trans that is nicely driveable on the steet, but will chirp tires when you get on it.

Those plates in the forground of that pic near the parking gear pawl hold down are the low reverse clutches.

How many miles do you have on this? And how highly built is the motor? If there was a lot of junk in the pan you probably should rebuild it.

There are several causes possible for the soft WOT shifts. One of them is a worn TV plunger assembly. Sonnax has a fix for that here:

I hope you are using a GN or aftermarket servo. This will help the 1-2 AND 2-3 shifts, as well as the 3-2 kickdown.

Now, don't forget the oil starvation problem on hard launches with the stock filter on the 200-4R.

anywhere I can get a pressure gauge for cheap? I see most of them for quite a bit, and I really don't plan on using it much...

it'll be another 2 and a half weeks before I get the chance to pressure test it... I'm back at school with the car sitting at home.

Thanks for the input. Are the low/reverse clutches supposed to be loose enough to wobble around by hand?

They have a lot of clearance in em.
 
I made my pressure tester out of and old compression guage. Used eigth inch copper tube and brass fittings.
