i remember seeing someones hotair car that has marks big heat shield but i remember seeing like a button or bolt that was drilled into it and then attached to the hood. it was near the top right hand corner closest to the front of the car. it was to keep it up tight to the hood and off the turbo. im looking to do this since i think that's what my knock sensor keeps hearing. anyways anyone see that picture? please post it up

if its your car let me know.

its from tr custom parts. and is stupid easy to make. but you need a bending break, cut-off wheel, and a hole saw to make it look nice.

you can barely see the bolt, but i drilled it so it would go into the hood brace. i'm using a a regular 86/87 pad. i drilled the hole with a hole saw directly over the exhaust housing to give me more clearance for my wastegate actuator and the housing itself. i cut and layered header wrap and layed it across the backside of the hole and used hi temp silicone to adhere it there. the actuator did still rub abit, but did no harm. black header wrap would have looked better. worked perfect!

only pic of it i got on my iphone. good luck

As i read the post/look at the picture. The movie BLOWN playing in the background. The part where Tommy lee Jones is singing The National Anthem haha ;)

thanks for the pic but i dont want to cut a hole. i want to just use a bolt and pull it tight to the hood brace. you got any other pics of yours?

i have used the heat shielding on the back side of the heat shield since day one.

anyways. any other picture

charlie you pervert!!:mad::p

i no longer have this setup brent, but i'm sure i got better pics. i will have to check on my laptop when i get home

boost231 do u need a pic of the metal piece that has several breaks in it giving it like a V look ? the piece that screws to the underhood that hoods the heat shield tight to the insulation and hood? if so i can get u a pic

post any pics you have. mine is screwed tight but it still isnt pressed against the insulator tight. was thinking of adding another screw to hold it tight near the front

thought for sure i had some closer up clear ones. here is zoomed in. i circled the bolt. it was small and barely noticeable. you could always use a counter sunk screw to help it go away. because of the hood bracing, if i remember correctly, you won't be able to do a second screw uniformly in line with where i put it. but it really wasn't needed anyway in my case.

i've ditched the stock hood liner in favor of this one 1982-1987 Buick Grand National Hood Liner Insulation: eBay Motors (item 200533865683 end time Oct-27-10 16:36:31 PDT)
and haven't looked back since. unless your turbo is literally big enough to touch the hood, then your clearance issues are over with this hood liner. and, you no longer need a heat shield. mine still looks new after a summer of sometimes 90+ heat on a black hood

thats what i was looking for. there is another picture out there with a better view. i pulled the hood liner out already and im ready to drill the hole to make it work. did you use a self tapping bolt or? also my turbo sits higher then stock so it presses pretty good on the heat sheild.

its just sheet metal, so any sheet metal or metal self-tapper screw will do. i used the same factory bolt that holds on the heat shield

brent, nobody knows your car better than you, and i could be wrong, but just speaking from my experiance, i'm gonna say that i highly doubt your picking up any knock from your turbo touching the heat shield:confused:
i haven't kept up with your post to see what kind of knock issues your having, but i'm sure you've ruled out the obvious, like checking the knock sensor torque?

it could be several things, its doing it during hard lauch so its false. the harder i lauch the higher it reads. also the flange on my down-pipe pushes up on the heat shield. the motor doesnt move so the downpipe isnt hitting etc. could be picking up the noise from the valve train as well or even through the chassis. i will find out just doing one thing at a time to find it.

what about taking off the heat shield and the entire hood insulation and doing a run just to see if you can rule it out?
or, if your concerned about the turbo heat wrecking hood paint....what about some pieces of old hood insulation (or some strips of header wrap)... to build you up a nice "cushion" inbetween the contact points on the turbo to hood? maybe use some silicone or aluminum tape to attach so it stays just for the run?

lol, not getting that involved yet. im going to have cal look at my files and stuff and just make sure he says its false. if he does i will slowly figure it out. right now im not really worried about it. running c16 and alky i should be fine. also car is still out in arizona and im out in cally. once that car is here i can figure it out more.

o also only does it at the track when i lauch it hard.

That is very nice... :) Hood liner too. ;)
