My family and I just about died tonight....

We all started getting sick middle of the night last night,,, vomiting and headaches etc..... I mean headaches like 5 times worse than my wifes migraned she gets.

Finally about 1 pm today it hit me, I had a guy work on our furnace last weekend so I goodled Furnace and headaches and Carbon monoxide poisoning popped up.

I read the symptoms and WHAM exactly what we had! I called the gas company and they came and we had levels 35-50 pp/M I think he said, I was half crocked with my headache and wasnt paying much attention.

He said get your family to the ER ASAP and if need be I will drive you.

We got there and they put us all 4 on hours of 15L of Oxygen and took blood samples, EKGs etc and we are now in a motel room until the new furnace gets in.

Beware of furnaces this time of year guys!!! We were literally a few hours from being "gone"

I have a CO detector in the basement that's loud enough to wake us all up.

For what they cost it makes no sense to not have one......

How old was the furnace? And what did the furnace guy fix?

Carbon monoxide can jack you up big time! Glad you figured it out before it was too late! I have 3 Carbon monoxide and other dangerous gases dectors in my home. One on every floor along with a dozen smoke dectors. Some say it might be a bit much but I've had the carbon monoxide dector in the living room go off when I have the GN warming up in the driveway outside for a few mins. with the basement door open! Even tho the upstairs door is closed it still sets it off. So there is more of that floating around then you think. Twice a year I clean out all my exhaust duck work from the heater and hot water heater. I've found dead birds in there and all kinda junk to clog it up.

Someone was watching over your shoulders for sure. You and your family are truly blessed to come out that one. Years ago I lost 2 real good co workers that I worked with at Kragen to CO poisoning. You were lucky you weren't sleeping as it might have been your final sleep. Every home should have C02 detectors unless you have electric heat.

Have one on each floor and smokes in every room.

Gas furnaces can have problems w/ the heat exchanger getting cracks in it.... Especially if it's several yrs old.
I had the same issue w/ the furnace @ the old place. It lasted 10 yrs, and was diagnosed w/ this problem, when the furnace man was working on the A/C....

Again, glad you and the family are ok.
I was involved in a lawsuit that involved such poisoning.. A trip thru the hyperbaric chamber was how drs got the monoxide out of the people's bloodstream...

That is scary, at least you had the sense to figure out something else was happening!

I replaced my furnace with electric heat and even had the gas log fireplaces capped off... I don't trust it... Electric either works or it don't!

I just put a new gas valve on a old boiler at work. The valve was hanging open a little after it shut off and raw gas was rolling out the orifices.

I have seen heat exchangers crack even being new . women close all or most vents then they go off on high limit too many times too much heat and they crack. Or they size the Duct work too small ,too many BTu's for the house......:biggrin:Get a C02 Monitor I have 2 you can see the numbers go up when I start my car and pull it out of the garage they work that fast. Let us know what happened?

Glad you and your family are okay Ty. CO is nothing to take lightly and CO detectors or Parakeet's are a Must in a home with gas. I went on a Heating call one time and the lady said she had headachs and by the time I got there her parakeet died!! I told her to get outside and it turned out to be the exhaust on her gas water heater was half cocked and letting exhaust gasses into the home..

You guys get better Ty and make some fun out of this while you have your new furnace installed.

scary! huh? my parents had same problem, they too figured it out. and were ok,
detectors have been part of out house hold since then, be sure to place them in the lowest spot, as the gas is heavier than air, and will collect there first.
glad all are ok!!!!!!!
now back to Merry Christmas!
