I finally got a job, and its not minimum wage. I start tomorrow and I nervous, but the pay wage keeps me interested. I sell newspaper subscriptions at local grocery stores.... do me a favor guys and gals, RESPECT the people that offer you newspapers, dont flip us off or cuss us out please. I can make between 100 and 300 dollars a day. Its not a scam. It depends on how many newspapers you sell. you make a salary plus a commision depending on what type of subscripton the customer chooses. If you sell more than 5 you get a 20 dollar bonus, and if you sell more than 7, you get a bonus from the store. A lady made 550 dollars in one day, and the manager makes a living salay wage by just selling newspapers. He told me he makes 70,000 a year sitting at a kiosk selling papers. Soooo yeah im going to do that;) my goal is 100 dollars per day:biggrin:.

Congrats!

Personally, I respect anyone who gets out there, busts their ass and makes a respectable living for themselves. Good luck with the new job 83!

tell me what store your at so i can give you the one finger salute. ;)

I wish you all the luck in the world kid. Hope it really does work out for you.

I wish I could find a job.. They don't like to give jobs to partime 16 year olds.. =\

I was in the same boat you are in now, kinda still, but you have to lower the bar and bite the bullet. A part time minimum wage job will do you good, trust me and your 16, that money will add up, put it under your mattress and sit on it, (dont trust banks). From there you can move up to a higher level or you can gain experience in a career that YOU want to do. ;)

tough sell

not trying to be negative but alot of people are standoff ish when it comes to people trying to sell them something in the grocery store at a kiosk. as i 20 yr vet in sales it'll be a good way to get your feet wet. but don't expect the same results you hear about. you have to gain exp and knowledge, plus alot of people are getting their news online these days so sad to say newspapers are on the downslide as sales go. also when a manager is trying to fill a position he may hype up the figures to get you interested. just stay on your toes, always smile and be respectful, listen, and think of rebuttals to those who wave you off. not everyone wants a free umbrella that looks like the newspaper.

on the upside sales is one of the highest paid professions and you may find your niche. only thing that really bites is sales commission is taxed like 38%, i saw monthly commission checks go from 12K to 7.5K after taxes. we all have to pay them but i'm just letting you know and good luck and keep a good attitude. don't let coworkers who are burned out cloud your judgement. last time i saw figures for everyone that will listen to your pitch there will be about 15 that will wave you off. know your product your selling and the plus side of it. one of the ones i can think of off the top of my head is if the newspaper has coupons in it let them know it'll practically pay for itself ( subscription wise ). i'm sure there are others but listen to who trains you and you may even see if you can listen in on others who work there. take their pitch and then put your own spin on it. last but not least good luck.

damn thats a downer:frown:

don't be bummed out

i was just trying to let you know the pitfalls of sales, it could be a spring board to a corporate sales job or a good high paying sales job, and most of those guys can make 6 figures. you'll have your good and bad days just like i said listen to your coworkers and who's training you and put your own spin on it. it'll be tough i'm sure for you for the 1st few months but depending on how things are you never know. smile, listen, attititude, and rebuttals always help even if your not selling something to someone just a simple hello seems to help and who knows it can be a good ice breaker. not trying to get you down on this job as it'll get your feet wet in sales if you haven't already been in it which i doubt since your young. So good luck and try it, never know, you may find out you like it and make yourself a good salary to boot.

Very good advice Anthony. Sales is very hard unless you listen. You need to adapt to the customer. Just please don't sell cars! That is one mess you don't want to get into.

I wish you well 83!! I have daughters that are getting there- she worked on the berry pickers up here last summer- but it's a job!!

I also had a crew of summer help that worked under a co-worker and myself and they would sit around and listen the their ipods- fired 3 of them in one day!! After they were asked 3 times to get going!!??

For now it's a start- keep a good work ethic and you'll do good.

Znix- I feel for you as well... it's tough at there- especially when your competeing with some older adults these days that are just looking for jobs!!

that happens to be one think I AM good at. I know all the rules, licensing, and registration rules to sell cars legally, or in other ways I wont mention... (im a good man, not doing what you think, dont judge me). My friend sells cars and for every car I help him sell I get a small cut of the profits. Sales happens to be my niche as well. Im thinking of going to buisness school this year maybe to become a good legitimate buisnessman.

just letting you know from experiance

as i said i've been in sales since 93 and there will always be days that you don't sell anything. try and get contact info as it helps later when your trying to followup. there are alot of ways to get into the potental customers pocket. regardless if your selling electronics or cars your attitude, approach always help. most people won't buy anything on impulse, a courtesy call just to see if they found what they were looking for is always helpful and helps on slow days when you have no traffic and may have the car or ? that meets their needs. i always had a spiral i kept all my info in, just details. as in cars if i was selling cars i'd ask is this for work or ?. space needed for who knows what? price range they are willing to spend and remember most people will say alot less then they really want to spend. everyone is trying to get a bargain, if you've never been in sales it's a learning process and alot of people wash out but some people thrive in it and know that it's the thrill of closing a deal and knowing you have a nice commission check and you filled the need of a customer. always give the customer a few extra business cards as if you do a good job referances will always bring you sales and you'll have friends of theirs coming in looking for you because you went that extra mile to help them find the car or truck they needed. as i said good luck don't get frustrated, alot of car sales people starve until they find their approach.

Good for you on the job... It's nice to see that there's still some people who will still get out there and hustle... My first job, like many of my peers was mowing huge lawns for $5. That's when gas was about $1 or less... Ugh I'm old... At my first "real job" I was 13-14 years old, working part time with special permit and permission at a local ice cream shop. Earned a whopping $2 an hour and I thought I was rollin':D

My friends didn't do squat.. When I turned 16 I had the dough to buy a car, they rode the bus... It's all out there for the taking. If you want yours, you've gotta get out there and make it happen. Don't let yourself go down the path of so many these days, sitting around with their hands out waiting for someone to put something in it for them...

Anyway, congrats once again and good luck with the sales.... Oh, and make sure you flirt with all the ladies...

This is a good example of what I'm talking about. I worked for them for 8 months and I was misrable. The car sales business is part of what is wrong with America, to say the least.
