Geesh! I had no idea had many opinions and data there was on the choice of oil for our cars!

I have an 87 GN with the Grooms level 3 engine, flat tappet engine. It seems that a lot of people like the Valvoline VR1 Racing oil 20w50. The car, as I was told by the previous owner, should only have AMSoil put in it. It's like $9 a qt and at 7 qts, that's an expensive oil change!

So here's my question, what oil are you comfortable with in your engine? Does anyone use AMSoil in their engines and is it worth the cost? $3 a qt for VR1 vs. $9 a qt for AMSoil leaves me thinking.............

Comments?

Ive used mobile 10w40 non synthetic oil for 10 years and never had a motor oiling problem.

Mobile oil does not break down with heat, try a search on mobile oil on this site and there are links to alot of technical mumbo jumbo.

Ive also been using 1 bottle of GM EOS (engine oil supplement) with every oil change for many years.

9 dollars a quart for oil is rediculous.

$9 a qt ridiculous???? Yes, i couldn't agree more! Does the supplement you use contain zinc? Is that why you are using it?

I have been running synthetic oils only since '86. First Redline 10W-30, and then Mobil 1 10W-30 after it got difficult to find Redline at a decent price. As the anti-scuff agents have decreased in street legal oils over the last few years, especially in the last year or so, I will be switching over to Valvoline 10W-30 or 10W-40 Racing oil. The kind that is illegal for street use and so marked. I am running a stock block motor with the normal bolt-ons, but I believe that a oil with a high anti-scuff agent compound such as zinc will benefit any motor with a flat tappet cam. GM EOS supplement does contain a high zinc content. I just did my first oil change yesterday with adding it as a supplement to the now puny Mobil 1. Fwiw, Valvoline VR1racing oil, (street legal version) has a little less zinc than the non-legal Valvoline Racing oil.

Probably a search under GM EOS might be benefitial also, as there have quite a few good threads on oils over the last year or so.

Ive been using Mobil 1 10W-30 with a bottle of EOS ever since I broke my new engine in and have had no problems. I think the last time I bought oil the Mobil 1 was about $5.99 a quart.

Ive heard very good things about Amsoil other than the price is outrageous!! A good friend of mine is an Amsoil dealer and every time he gets a new price list the price keeps going up and up. He showed me his dealer catalog for the oil costs and I think the 10W-30 was like seven bucks a quart COST!!! It probably more by now that was a few months ago.

Wal-Mart usually has the 5qts of Mobil1 synthetics for around $20. I always buy the Mobil1 from Wal-Mart. I use it in my LS1 Firebird. I have only done the break in on my GN Engine w/ Castrol GTX 10W-30.

Rotella 10w-30 with a bottle of the Red STP oil additive. I change it often so heat is a non issue. I would definately run the stock weight of 10w-30...lighter can cause less oil pressure.

Where can you find the red bottle of STP? I always see blue oil treatment at the stores

I'm not sure what I was thinking..it is a blue bottle I use. I'm getting old...

Ive heard a couple people sayting that is was a red bottle. Looks like I'll be buying some next time. Or maybe some EOS from work:)

Royal Purple 10W40 I f you use 20w50 will hurt motor on stat up does not lubercate properly.

started running Valvoline "Premium Blue" oil for diesel engines. haven't racked up many miles yet though so I haven't been able to make any observations on wear yet. great oil pressure though, even in the Dallas heat.

Mobile 1 oil and oil filter. Oil filter is about $10 and oil is..... well I got a hook up so my oil change is about $11 with filter.

I been hanging out over on the BITOG forums quite a bit lately. The rumor there is that EOS is discontinued. But AC Delco may pick it up under part # 10-106. Maybe one of our GM techs could confirm this.

Bob Is The Oil Guy: GM EOS discontinued...now what for ZDDP?

Those guys prefer Street Legal Oil Boost (SLOB) and Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment. Still looking for either of those
