Paint Stripper For cast Alum

Picked up a nice set of orig GM Performance valve covers for a SBC TT project . they are almost to nice to strip , but personally I'm not crazy about the colour . so... I want to strip them down and get them powder coated or possibly anodized. they were done in a Urethane Paint . anything out there at the local hardware store (Home Depot , Lowes) that you have used that will strip paint off of cast alum without damageing or pitting ? or any kind of home brew ? Thanks .

How about a propane torch? It should burn the paint off and not be hot enough to damage the aluminum.

Good thinking charlief1 !! never even thought of that one . I was orig thinking of maybe glass beading . But, I'm not big on glass beading alum manifolds and valve covers . so... I may give that a try with the propane torch or heat gun on a small section and see what happens .

Those are powder coated so the color isn't going to go down without a fight. Benco B-16 is the best for stripping powder but it's NASTY caustic stuff. I have used Aircraft stripper on PC'ed valve covers with some sucess. You can always put them in a blast cabinet.

Use Aluminum oxide. it won't imbed in the surface and pop out when they're recured.

Thanks guys . I was told they were done in a Urethane paint . I'll start off with heat and see what happens . if nothing, then work my way up to the nasty stuff .
a little trick a powder coater told me to remove powder coat is to put a little nick in the coat surface . than soak the powder coated part in warm soapy water for a extended period of time . The water will penetrate the back surface of the powder coat and lift it right off . never tried it , so not 100% sure if it works .

I don't know how to say this politely , but your powder coater is stoned....

lol....actually he was a big biker dude and he could of been . lol that's what I was told .he said it worked real well on sheetmetal that was powder coated . sort of made sense to me seeing that I'm not a powder coater . The coat is almost like a "skin coat" and I could sort of see the water getting behind it and lift/blister it off . Like I said I'm NOT a powder coater and have NEVER tried it .

easy off oven cleaner trust me that will get just about anything off.

Just a follow up : Aircraft stripper worked GREAT ! Thanks for the suggestion . just got them back from Powder Coaters . I'm very happy the way they turned out

Yep. brush on a coat, cover it w/ Saran Wrap. Keeps the fumes onto the surface..
