I wanna replace the timing chain gaskets on my 231 nonturbo engine..

I read the haynes manual and it says to remove cooling hoses, distributor and fuel pump.. Why? And do i really have to?

I did a complete cooling system upgrade myself several months ago... so im familiar with taking most of the front stuff off.. But i dont see why i should remove those just to get to the timing chain. I know i'll need a puller for the balancer, etc..

Any information is delighted..
Thanks..

Timing chain gasket ?? Do you mean the timing chain cover gasket???Or also known as the front cover ?

The reason for removing all of those parts is so that you can remove the timing chain cover. The dist is meshed up with the cam gear this along with the balance will prevent you from proper removal.

Sounds like the Haynes book os for a carbed Regal as there's no fuel pump mounted to the front cover, and the distributor is replaced with the Cam sensor on our cars....and yes the cam sensor has to come out.
You'll also need to drop the oil pan in order to get the front cover gasket back on and sealed correctly. Some have done it without removing it, buts is a crap shoot at best for it to seal and not leak without dropping the oil pan.
