Would like to put a roll cage in my car it will have a lot of street use and a little track use  , what are the ups and downs when having one in a everyday street car? what about the rear seat passengers what kind of hassle would it be for them to get in and out? thanks

Rear seat basically unusable unless you get a removable crossbar, but that's not NHRA legal...Some people do it anyway and get away with it.

Will make more noise going down the road, I once read it described as a big tuning fork in your car.

Bothers some people and not others.

Only my kids use the back seat since they need to crawl under the crossbar behind the front seats. A swingout on the diagnal bar would help entry and exit for the driver. The bar in my car really stiffened up the ride of my T-top car.

another minus for the cage in a street car is this.... If you get in a wreck on the street are you going to be wearing your helmet like at the track???? That pipe is gonna hurt when your head hits it. I had a 10 point cage in mine and cutting it out was the best thing I ever did. I havent been to the track in a long time and I got tired of crawling over it, nobody can ride in the back seat, and you have to be real bendy to get at anything under the dash. If your kids are riding in the back seat and you have to slam on the brakes chances are there will be teeth getting knocked out. Thats my take on this. :D

Do you plan on wearing a helmut when driving on the street? If not, then it will NOT be safer in a street car when your skull crushes the bar without a helmut. Everyone seems to forget that aspect of it.

I know, I know, If you roll your car over it will save you.... How many guys have rolled their cars on the street vs. being T-boned or side swiped?

I have never known anyone to go through an NHRA certification with a cage that has removable side bar(s). Maybe track tech inspectors did not check a car that had a cage and removable bars but it would never get a cert with the removable bars. Also it is against NHRA rules to run with an un-certified cage. None of this applies to roll bars since they dont need to be certified.

I put a cage in my street car and I must say I am sorry I did it. The car is very noisy going down the road now, every little thing is amplified and transmitted through the cage. The back seat is completely useless to anybody over 5 years of age or a contortionist. I bump my head constantly getting in and out, and parking in a parking lot next to another car is nearly impossible because of how far you have to open the door to get out.The worst part is that there is no going back, the car has already been cut. I understand the need in a race car, but in car that sees mostly street duty, don't do it!

If you don't need it, stay away! It's a pain on the street and those bars would definitely create a bad injury in a wreck w/o a helmet on. I have a full cage and drive it on the street a lot. Trust me...it pretty much sucks! Now, a 6pt bar wouldn't be too bad. Before I upgraded to a 10pt, I had a 6pt in the car. The side bars weren't exactly NHRA legal b/c they were very low. Track officials never said anything about it....and the local track is VERY strict. It was easy to get in and out of, not bad on the street, and not much of a danger of hitting my head on any of the bars. Another thing is harness belts suck on the street. If I could do it again, I would have left the factory seat belt in the car so I could still use it on the street.

I tried making that exact same point the other night and some "Cage" experts... chumed in and assumed that the cage was noisy because it was poorly constructed...lol

it really depends on who in stalls the cage....a custom cage is much better than a pre fab cage but you will pay for the difference...now a cage is much different than a bar....how quick/fast your car is will determine what you need

Pretty sure that the Cage "experts" told you that if you think it'll cut the value of your car in half you must be using hack's to put your cages in.

Everyone that's ever been around a car with a bar or cage knows it's going to make noise. That's just part of it.

I do think your shaky, noisy, rattle trap comment was a bit over the top though...If it's that bad I think you need to start looking for what's making that much noise, you make it sound like you are going to drive down the road and it sounds like the fenders are gonna fly off the thing.

Not even close. Try re-reading the post again vs. putting your own spin on what was said...

You're the one who is throwing the whole they don't make noise spin on this, I wonder if you even understand what people are saying on this board. Perhaps your reading comprehension isn't quite what it needs to be for a educated conversation.

My bad...When someone posts something that's completely untrue it gets me worked up...I'll leave it alone now.

I'm in the process of installing a 6 point in my car right now. I must say it was a hard decision to do this. I had a 6 point in my old car and regretted getting it done because of the stiffness and noise.
Two reasons why I'm doing it again:
1. Safety, no one can argue with that.
2. My local track requires it. Got banned and can't go back until I have a rollbar. The track is 30 minutes from my house. Next nearest track is 40 minutes. The ONLY track I can run at without bar is almost two hours away and there is a dip in the right lane around the 1000'.

My local track is by far better and way closer. Plus they race twice a week. It was a no brainer for me. I understand it won't ride like it did before, but My friend and I are doing all the work ourselves, so I won't have lots of money tied up in it. That way when I get sick of it I can cut it out and won't feel like I wasted my money.

I will say this, if you have a street car that you'll never take to the track, a rollbar will be a mistake.

well I have cages in both my cars .. Used the SFI padding on the bar does protect you driving on the street . Did we want to put cages in .. well the Mazda "tin can" ya.. Melissa's GN ?? NO!!! BUT ya have to use your head when the car starts getting faster . "Mom" said slow the car down or cage it.. we arn't goin to slow it down and the rest of the cage was done a week later.. Her car gets driven everyday!! Way I look at it its your head not mine. Ya kill yourself or cripple yourself welll thats life in the big city !! If ya don't want to do it for yourself THINK about your kids growin up without Dad!!

Oh Happy Fathers Day guy's
