how much seat pressure is too much for a 204/214 flat tapped cam. my engine builder installed a set of spring but they are heavy dutty, ill find out how many pounds they r. i told my friend about it and he says that they r too much but the engine builder is reputable im the houston area. i believe they r between 130-160 pounds of seat pressure.

wait, my mechanic just called me and thinks there about 110# of seat pressure. i can get ahold of the engine builder.

That's way to much pressure. Seat pressure should be between 90 and 100 lbs. At 130 lbs seat pressure my guess is he's used to setting up dirt track engines that don't last a full season. That kind of pressure is used more for a higher RPM level engine like a SBC.

IF the cam and lifters were broken in, MAYBE they could handle 130, MAYBE. But.... It it's not broken in, then anything over 100 is going to eat that cam alive!!!!!!

204/214 shoot for 100-110 max. Flat tappet cams don't like seat pressure, especially on break in. If you spin it hard (over 6K) then you'll need more spring, but only after break in. Even than it will eat itself in short order. I refuse to install flat tappet cams anymore.

I wouldnt want anyone thinking if they were working on my engine.

We'll its rather an interesting story. Took my T-Type (the one in my avatar) to a restoration shop and they had a reputable an Engine Builder machine and assemble my motor (had milkshake) . I went to pick the car up and it was running but not right. The shop which is a really good shop but they just aren't familiar with our cars. They are more familiar with typical 60's,70's muscle cars and LS Engines and they specialize in body work (I was planning on doing a frame off restoration). They tried and tried but couldn't get the car running just right. I had a friend from my Houston Buck Club who has his own shop pick it up and help me get it running right, i thought it was a tunning issue so i told the shop i'll take care of the tunning. We'll we ran a compression check and cyl's 2 and 4 had no pressure. We pulled the engine out and noticed to piston heads scrored and bent valves. The Engine builder came by my buddies shop and fixed the problem but i forgot to ask what whats the seat pressure on my springs. Another friend who is a member of this board, a good friend, and in the same buick club as I am told me my springs are too much for my cam but myself and my friend who is assembling my motor. So the motor is apart now and more than likely i will be ordering a new set of springs but i plan on contacting the engine builder and asking him what my spring pressure (Sorry for being long winded, just drank 3 cups of coffee because today is dead lift day in the gym and i need the extra motivation)

We'll I'm looking at upgrading but this car is getting expensive and very frustrating.
