Original transmission and original stock d-5 convertor. The transmission shifts extra firm at part throttle, especially the 1-2 shift. As in making the cd skip in the cd player. However, at wot the shifts are extremely soft, almost to the point of slipping. Is this just a matter of adjusting the tv cable or something more serious? Thanks, R.B.

That was a problem with the stock calibration. The only way to address it is to put in a recalibration kit. CK has an easy one to install and will drastically improve the WOT shifting as long as the band and clutches are still good.

exactly what is involved with installing the recalibration kit. is it as easy as dropping the pan and removing the valve body?

I'm having the same issue. What is the best way to check to see if the band and clutches are still good?

there is a good chance the band and clutches are pretty burned if its a higher mileage unit and this has been going on for a while. Change the filter and fluid and install the shift kit. You will have to drop the valve body and change a couple of springs and checkball locations. I would also install one of his billet servos to help out both the 1-2 and 2-3 shift. It may save the tranny for a while but even if it doesn't its reusable during a rebuild. Also overfill the tranny 1 quart because it may be sucking air and causing lower line pressures thus slipping.

would the billet servo be too harsh for the stock internals, like no hardened parts besides a stator, or is it a pretty safe upgrade?
The billet servo is fine on the stock internals as long as the cushion springs are used. Chris and i installed one in a bone stock trans to see what it would do. It firmed up the 2-3 shift as well as the expected 1-2,3-2. This was with absolutely no other mods to the trans. It was exactly like GM calibrated it back in 1986. One of these servos with about 240psi line (accomplished with a .500 TV boost valve and pressure reg spring), CK recalibration kit, alto wide band for 2nd, 5 alto reds in direct for 3rd, and 3 in OD will make for a really nice performing transmission without any expensive hard parts that will work well into the low 11's and is very affordable.
The clutch material will be in the pan if there burned and it will slip noticeably under power. The direct drum may be glazed and could also cause a 1-2/3-2 slide even if replacing the servo and band if it isnt resurfaced.
That and removing an internal snap ring from the pump body to replace the boost valves and spring and drilling some holes in the plate unless you buy a new plate with the holes drilled. It would take someone on their back about 2 hrs. Ive done one in about 45 minutes including refilling and checking fluid level of the trans on a lift. You will need some petroleum jelly or trans assembly grease. Other than that its fairly easy. the worse thing is the constant dripping atf.
