so finally got some free time this weekend and the trans is out
last problem was that the car would go no where when slowly accelerating and late hard 2nd shifts. many suggested the spring on the gov but it was still intact. so next suggestion was stripped stator spline or something like that.
took out the converter and the teeth look ok..you can fell very small shavings if you run your fingers on them but nothing noticeable??

what else could it be???

here are a couple pics that may or may not help...like i said teeth still have meat on them

the trans felt like it was slipping and it would barely go and at some point small amount smoke would come into the car since i had the center console out..and i could hear a rattling noise under the car towards the transmission

That stator needs to be replaced at the very least. If you are not familier with trannys get someone who is to look it over with you. I would pull it all the way down to the lo roller support and look at all the clutches, band and drums etc. Easy job and its out already.

do you think that would be the main problem
my plans were to take it to a shop and get them to do some work on it but im worried they will come out with the you need this n that n i will turn out to an expesnive trans

Give a ....

call to Chris at CK and see if he has any more of his trans manuals left. For about $60.00 you will get all the understanding you'll need to repair or upgrade your tranny. While you are at it purchase his gasket kit and ask about the rebuild kits that he has availble. His book also discribes as well as pictures of what tools are needed. It's a wealth of info.

i was on his website looking around nd came across that manual..i have no idea what goes on in a trans yet alone try n fix one..so this would help me out...let me do some search and hopefully i can tackle it this weekend

The stator support is not the problem. Forward clutches are shot if the car slips in 1st.

I will fix anything on my car except a trans. Send it to one of the good vendors thats closest. Hopefully its a day driving or just ship it. Get a good 10 sec build & dont worry again. For $1500 it can be shipped both ways with all work done using billet parts by someone who knows these things in & out with all the little tricks.
I wouldn't use just some local shop unless 3 guys can vouch for him that had work done on their Buicks.

Now if you have the patience, tools & time yourself Great, but it will take you longer than what they will take. Probably including the drive or shipping time.

how does the stator support look in the above pics??
once i take it apart what am i looking for??

ill just have to ask around see what options i have around here...i really wouldnt like to even touch the trans. but if theres anything i can do to save $ or just to learn ill do it??

I would look at the sticky at the top of the page there are some good trans builders listed in CA. maybe one of them is close to you.

Can you give us a list of recommended 200R4 performance transmission guys that can do all that for $1500? I've only seen 10 sec trans for $2500 and up.

found acouple shops already
but now i need help what exactly am i asking for
a total rebuild?
fixing whats wrong?
upgrading it?

im not looking for a strip trans
still want it to be a daily driver trans that will actually hold mid to low 11's( if thats possible)

It sounds like you're having the same issues i've recently have going on with my 87 T, so you're not alone with the headache. From what you posted as your symptoms, it's looking like i'm in a similar boat as you.

Last week i went to go pick up the air filter and plug wires from autozone where i had ordered to get them ( i was finishing up the process of completing the tune-up, as i had put in new plugs just had to wait on air filter and the plug wires.) when things got very interesting for me. On the way to pick up the parts it started slipping badly and was seeing alittle smoke coming from under the transmission area. So i pulled into the gas station not too far from the autozone here in town and parked it to prevent doing any more harm to it. I walked about a block or so down to where autozone was to pick up those parts and a couple other things while i was there. I walked back to the car and called my road side assistance to send someone to come tow it back home not wanting to add to the problem.

I spent alot of time searching online trying to find out what the cause was for what it was doing. I hadn't driven it since, only started it up after i changed the air filter and plug wires the next day. I just ran into this thread and after reading the posts it was clear to me that this is probably what has happened to my Transmission as well. I'm sorry to see you having the problem, but it's nice to know i'm not the only 1 having the issue and there's a starting point for the mechanic to attack the problem. I'm sure it's not gonna be cheap, but at least i can give alot more info as to what's going on to the mechanic which should make it easier and faster for them to make the repairs.
Hopefully that's all it is and not something else in our case.

One of the most experienced and knowledgeable shops for GN trans work is just a ways up the road from you outside Sacramento.

Contact Bruce Tolle whose info is in this forum! :)
