Anyone figure out a way to remove the front pump without the $75 tool? I have a hard time spending $75 for a tool that I could make for $10 (if I knew the diameter of the groove they cut in the end of it). I have gear pullers. If I could get something to clamp around the shaft without damaging the splines.....

Thanks,
Jim

Drop the pan and remove the TCC solenoid,
remove pump bolts, use a small prybar to pop the pump out.

When you get the pan, filter, and TCC solenoid off, and the bolts out, you can take a small prybar or medium flat tip screwdriver between the case and pump. It is easy to figure out.
Automatic transmissions are relatively complicated but this is a simple procedure that someone with minimal skills should be able to accomplish.

Here's an online rebuild article I'm working on, maybe it will help.

WOW! that was easy. One more question. Im tearing apart a 2004r trans that had been previously upgraded. From what I heard it has billet drum, trans brake and some other upgrades which we dont know of. How can I tell if the parts Im pulling out are stock or upgrade? Ive done tranny's before but not a 2004r, mostly benz tranny's. Thanks again!

front pump removal.

The only parts I use when building my 2004r is a couple of screw drivers, snap ring pliers,a home made tool to pull center support and a rubber mallot, and gauges to measure clearance.(old school style)hand tools and machine shop if needed to clean and machine parts.

Post pics of the parts and we can tell you if they aren't stock.

Okay here are the pics of the parts that came out the tranny. ITs a BRF Tranny but not sure which valve body it has and from what I heard it has a "billet drum" which I cant tell. Let me know what parts I need to replace and which parts I should keep. Eventually I want it to handle a low 10 sec car and maybe even see a few high 9 sec passes......

It looks like BRF internals including valvebody. It definitly needs a rebuild. I see it has a trans brake in it.

It's got the BR light purple paint on the valvebody, & it's the GN type servo. Can't tell about the governor.

I don't think the input shaft is stock.

The direct clutch drum needs to be resurfaced by sanding the band apply surface. Replace that band.

I can't tell if the pump front seal drainback has been drilled wider. And I can't tell you the pump condition without disassembly pictures.

You will need a billet servo, a billet shaft forward clutch drum (looks like you have a stock one there, but I may be wrong), deep pan, & modified pickup for running in the 10's, among other things.
