Turbo time... need some insight on how the CPT-65 would suit my needs.

Pretty much have my mind made up. My TE-52 has lots of shaft play and the turbine side oil seal is going out. Talked to Jack today, and it sounds like the CPT-65 turbo would be the way to go. My only concerns are should I go with a 4" inlet w/ a 3" adaptor, and will my 50#er's be enough? I really like these injectors. My time's ran were with about 60% pulse width. And about the 4" inlet housing, what do you guys think. Just keep wondering, can I handle this turbo?

you won't benefit from the 4" inlet........unless you have better heads (like aluminum) and no maf.......
 
That's what I was thinking. But Jack feels strong that this housing is worth about 20 hp due to the housing scroll. He has set up many in this fashion with a 3" MAF. I am thinking about having one built in the T60 3" housing, but I haven't made up my mind. I am staying with a MAF and stock ECM.

That seems a little "underestimated"...what was this measurement taken with?

Was this at WOT through an 1/8th or 1/4 mile?

A "safe" Injector DC is referenced as being in the range of NMT 80-85%.

The CPT-65 is a sweet turbo. Are you going with the BB & Q-trim options?

Measured with DS. Going BB. Thinking about staying with P trim, but I haven't yet decided. And that is 1/4 mile WOT. Think that the double pumper could cause low DC # as these? Maybe because the Extender is still controlling pulse width at these MAF levels?
 
Stu, ask Jack about the Q-trim & follow his advice, if the wallet allows. Sounds as if you're getting a nicely "scienced-out" turbo!

A 60-70% DC is what I'd expect from 83s!

I thought that was too good to be true. Another thing I will look into. The car seemed to run pretty strong though, at least by my standards. No Knock, but I would have liked to see higher o2s. In the 740-760 range. I would like to solve some other problems before I introduce another variable into the equation, but I think this turbo is on it's last leg. And I think about that T350 turbine wheel coming apart everytime I go down the track.

You're in good hands with Jack, so all will work out fine.

You've going to have a nicely balanced combo...with the possible exception of the injectors. They are the "weak-sister" as compared to any of the other of your listed components.

Since you're going to want a new chip for the new turbo anyway, this would be a logical time to get Bob Bailey at Ramchargers to update/upgrade the ECM for low-imp injectors (approx. $125), and Racetronix is running a sale on 72s or 75s right now.

That's probably the last set of injectors you'll ever need, and you'll not need to be concerned about DC ever again, most likely.

Bob can burn a chip for your new combo that will start, idle & run as smoothly as a stocker.

All help is much appreciated. Now let's hear some things about P VS. Q trim, and water pump pulley/upper rad. hose and IAC clearance with 4" inlet. Although I think 3" would still allow me to achieve my goals. (which have now changed to a high 10 maybe). My goal was a mid 11 till my turbo started to fritz. Good excuse to go bigger, but not good enough to change everything.
 
That's the main thing to keep in mind with upgrades...you have to bring the collateral supporting items along with you!

Maintaining the proper balance in a combo is a bit like dominos, for sure.

Reading up on the Q-trim for use with a BB-turbo convinced me, especially with the 4" inlet. Again, even within one component, you're looking for balance...not too much here, while scrimping/slacking elsewhere...balance. You don't want one component "racing ahead" of the rest of your engine.

You've done a good job with your other selections, and I'm sure you'll do the right things with the right parts at this juncture in your build-up, just as you have previously.

I have the 4" inlet and have no clearance problems. I did not need the 4", but I figured I might grow into it if I ever do. Better to only spend once if you can.
I have not been to the track yet with it, but it pulls alot harder than the 44 I had on there.
I'm running 50s also. I've only had the boost up to about 20 and had no problems going lean. Thats with a 100 octane Ramchargers chip.

You got that right. What have you read about the Q trim, I did a search, but did not find much.

Hey slowGN, that sounds like about as big as a jump as I am going to make. Doesn't sound like you have any regrets so far. If you have any pics of that turbo in or out of the car I would really like to see them.
 
WHOA!!!!! that'l scare the neighbors.:D Damn the reservations, if I need bigger injectors, then I will do it by all means necessary. How does it drive slowGN? Is it a BB?
 
No its not a BB. To much $$:eek:
I had on there for about a year with the stock converter and it was a real pig. I put in a 3200 9x11 last week and it really woke it up. its fun to drive again. no complaints at all.
Can't wait to get to the track now. Need a new pair of slicks though:)

How does the stock style actuator do in controlling the boost? How many pounds do you run?

Well it's a done deal, order was placed today. BB CPT-65, .63, P-trim, big compressor housing. Hurts to drop that kind of cash. But I am really excited. Turbonetics is backed up for a couple of weeks, I hear from Jack. Realistically, it will probably take a month or so to get it. Will post some pics when it gets here.

Appreciate all of everybody's help on this post (and all other posts for that matter.)
