I use to own a 1991 SHO. For those not familiar with these cars, they are sleepers, and if you were to run up against one that was SC'ed or turboed on the highway, you better have your A game going. Mine was strong normally aspirated so I can only imagine what the power adders do. I did a few basic mods to mine, exhaust, chip, cold air intake, and believe me, these cars would definitely move out on the top end. So these videos are not all unrealistic to me. I don't doubt one bit that these SHO's can pull a vette or Lightning on top end. Supercharging or turboing one these would definitely make some serious power, I'm sure. In the time that I owned my SHO, I was very impressed with the motor, pulled strong thru all rpm ranges. If I'm not mistaken, I think these motors were built by Yamaha and used their superbike technolgy in some aspects of building these motors. I could be completely wrong here but....maybe one of you SHO guys can verify this. I would definitely consider another SHO if the right deal became available. You guys have my respect, as I have first hand experience of what a SHO can do. Welcome to the board, always cool to see other euthusiasts who enjoy their rides.

Brad

Hey Tim, nice of you guys to give some insight. I agree that the videos don't do your cars justice. Out of curiousity, what the hell does that Vette run in the quarter?

As far as top end goes, I know a stock Sho can run 146mph. So I'd be confident that boosted Sho's could run speeds comparable to a modded vette.

I had a 92 SHO..........loved it. Sadly it got totaled in a snowstorm.

Sold it to a guy on ebay who was going to take the engine and make a twin turbo 32 ford SHO.

From some of the pics he sent me he was quite capable.

From what I remember these engines were WAY detuned by ford when they received them back from yamaha as to not embarass the GT nor nuke the ford belt driven accessories :p

Think those engines were adaptable to RWD with the use of a modified astro bellhousing and a T5.

I am the furthest thing from a blue oval fan but all the same.......respect where due........they are a nice ride.

i still dont get it

get a fender and let out is a win?

400-500 horsepower and only 115 MPH?

i dont want to be rude, but alot of heavier cars with less horsepower trap higher MPH....

if these cars are such great top end cars, wouldnt they MPH more in the 1/4?
cause we all know MPH reflects how much horsepower you have!

peace

We were racing on a highway (deserted highway in Costa Rica for our law enforcement readers! :)

Once we came upon traffic we let off otherwise we would have ran higher mph and possibly more distance between us. We had a spotter run ahead to atleast be somewhat safe.

All of us raced at least twice sometimes 4 times to make sure who had the faster car. Its hard to tell in the video but we were clicking along about 130 or so when we let off. I know my car is capable of wayyyyy more than my 140 speedo says.

If anything we would have walked on the vette even more as mph went up.

Again on the mph in the 1/4...our first and second are no good at the track. All we do is spin. So I can't really use full boost until I hit third gear. By the time I'm moving I'm triping the 1/4.

Thanks for letting me come on here to explain our cars. Yeah we are nuts for building these cars. But let me tell you its all so sweet when a 4-door family car can out legged a vette, cobra and even a few bikes.

Thanks,
Murph

I can see it both ways on that video the only thing I don't like is that when I raced and beat the SHO that video got "messed up" by the cameraman. Yet when I spoke to the cameraman he said he could clearly see me in the camcorder. And you definatly don't see or hear about any of those races. And I ever read something on their board about Toolman beating the cobra's which he did not.

If you ever make it down here with toolman I have a couple of Cobras and a couple of bikes that I would be more that happy to race you in.

I for one like the video and am glad to see people doing some serious mods to SHOs, I've always thought them to be good platforms if you know what you're doing.

Ignore some of the guys posting here, they're jealous because Turbo Buicks have ****ty top ends :p

Thanks for coming over and posting, Murph. This board needs more performance-minded guys from all brands, the brand-loyal fascism on this board is amazing.

No we don't need them please! Probably over here cause their own can't stand them.

We need more brands? BUICK'S & FORDS don't MIX

Sorry I did not mean to dis you but those vids looks bad for your cars.. The other cars let off and you guys stayin into it and called em wins.. Do you really think a modded C5 will not get by you top end?? An LS6 modded C5 should be a 165-175 mph car. Your cars are fast and i have always loved sho's but that vid did not do your cars justice..

No hard feelings.. :)

Again Frank, the other cars NEVER LET OFF. I ( the camera car) let off first in every race I did. I do not understand what you mean by 'you guys'. All races were filmed from my turbo SHO. The first race was the Lightning, and I passed him decidedly. He never lifted. The second race was against one of the supercharged SHO's. Again, I let off first once I had about a car on him. The third race was against the Vette. The Vette even started in 2nd gear (to my 3rd). While he grabbed about half a car through second, and perhaps a couple of feet when I grabbed 4th (he was still in 3rd), as soon as he shifted to 4th you can see the tables clearly turn in the SHO's favor. He NEVER LIFTED, not until he screams by me after I let off due to traffic. Had the raced went further, I would have only pulled more. I simply can not see why you think that either the L or the Vette lifted. While a modded C5 may be good for 175, I have no doubt I am good for 175. I have had the car to 165+ a number of times, and it was not slowing down. What can I say? I raced a stock 405hp Z06, and the higher the speeds went the more the race went in my favor (we went 160+). And of course, no hard feelings. It is only cars we are talking about.

Again, it was obvious that above 120 the SHO was winning the race. The vette owner knew it (and freely admitted it) and I knew it. There was no reason to continue, but I would have had there not been a car in my lane. I will make sure the next vid I shoot shows a more decisive victory.

03 Cobra, 3600lbs, 390 rated HP (but most dyno 370+). Average trap 110-113.

02 Z06, 3150lbs, 405 rated HP (dyno around 360). Average trap 112-115.

SRT10 Viper 3357lbs 500 rated HP (no idea on dyno HP). Average trap 118-121.

Ford SHO, 3300+lbs, 380whp, traps 115. Sounds about right to me, perhaps 1-2mph shy of where it could be.

My new dyno was 430whp, and with that I am expecting some better trap speeds, but when you can not apply full throttle until just before the 1/8th mile, your trap speed reflects it. I gain about 32mph on average in the last 1/8th. That is loads better than the 200lb lighter 20less WHP Vette, and loads better than the similarly powered 03 Cobra.

Chris, trust me, no offense to the cameraman, but he was a very poor cinematographer. I was lucky to get the little bit of film that I did. On that race we had, I cut the film at the last possible frame before the picture swung down onto my dash and floorboard. I posted that vid in plenty of places, and every time I openly admitted how I got clearly walked, and even stated that while the vid ended prematurely, the Cobra continued walking. Nowhere did I post that I won that race, nowhere. The vid clearly shows me losing, why would I say I won? Perhaps I read you wrong, but it sounds like you are saying you read that on the SHO board. Here is a quote from there:

Oh yeah, he for sure pulled on me. Fastest car I ever raced. Probably traps 120 (475 whp is healthy). Stock 03's are trapping 110-112, and he is putting 100 more whp out than stock. We will line up again I feel, and I will get better video.

Well' I am Jay but I have seen this video on every conceivable web site around and the only place I saw the other was tfcc. And like I said before I didn't feel credit was gived to either Cobra that you raced even when I came and told you nice race and that I was really impressed with your car. All you said is that you were not done and had more mods planned which to me meant that you were going to come back and smoke me. Chris's car traps higher than 120 as does mine. I am all about some friends racing but I will not doubt give credit when I get beat as it happens ofter I just didn't feel like you did the same.

Sorry, thought you were Chris. Yes, this vid has been picked up and posted in more places perhaps, but I posted both vids and the same places. Again Jay, I apologize if I did not give you guys enough props. You have only to read my posts on the sites where I posted the vids to hear me praising the mighty Roots blown 03's. And don't worry, I have no aspirations of trying to outrun you or Chris, no matter how much mods I have left to do. Perhaps if you removed your sc belt for a run :D If I can make it any more clear how much I respect both of your vehicles, I will do it. How about you guys let me get some better vids of you cars and feature them in a little movie I have planned? This one is going to feature a number of different vehicles, and is going to include road course action, drag strip vids, street vids, in-car and stationary cameras, multiple angle shots, and will be edited much better (got some editing software, no more Windows Movie Maker crap!). Trust me, I will more than do your cars justice.

Spring Fun Run

Why do we drive SHOs and build them up? I'll give you guys some answers. Ever see the face of a Viper owner when a 11 year old 4 door grocery getter blows his doors off on the interstate? Priceless. Secondly our car insurance for full coverage for a year is probably cheaper than a lot of you guys monthly. BTW that red SHO probably top ends around 180 something we aren't sure though our speedo only goes to 140.

Most SHO drivers built their SHOs for road courses and here in Texas our 3 annual fun runs. Like where we were going the day this video was shot. After the highway racing we drove 240 miles of windy twisty back roads, where the average speed was over 95mph. A fun run is like riding a roller coaster but your the one driving.

For those of you that like to drive your cars other than a straight line your more than welcome to come and join us for our next fun run, it will be the weekend of April the 17th, 2004 (that's the weekend after Easter this year)

Most SHO owners love whippin up on Mustangs on the highway, SHOs are Ford's biggest sleepers.

 :D

Oh Yeah Granny's cars always impress me:rolleyes: I am now mamed for life.
I will never look at another SHO again without thinking of this Thread... Please pull it..
