Want a new hot rod...what besides another TR?

Don't have a TON of money to spend, so Vettes and the like are out. Thinking of a LS1 car of an 03-04 Cobra. Any other ideas?

2010 Camaro SS, the new mustang looks terrible, I would never buy anything Dodge, I like to go more than 3 years without breaking down or rusting.

I missed an 03' Cobra at an auction the other day that had TONS of mods on it and it went cheap, although there had to be some reason it was at the auction. I got off @ 15k and it only brought 16k, probably should've bought it.

Anyway, it looks like a Cobra is gonna run at least 20k. Let's say that I'm definitely going to spend that much. I could buy a nice LS1 car for 10-12k and spend the rest on go fast goodies.

No, It's a friend of mine. It has been off the street for a year due to a beginners mistake. I would have to tell you the whole story in person. I think I agree with the LS1 guys on the price. Yet the forced induction side of me loves the Cobra more. They both are harder to work on than the ole' Buick.

For a little over $20K you can pick up a nice C5 Z06.

If you're looking for go-fast and reasonably inexpensive, I would also go with a 4th gen F-Body (01 or 02 preferable since it already has the better intake on it). Those cars can be made stupid fast with little work. And they can take a LOT of abuse.

05-06 GTOs can be had for fairly cheap. 400hp/400tq awesome interior, nice ride, not a rattle trap like the f-bodies. Depends on what you want. The f-bods can be had for cheaper, and probably a little faster mod for mod. The GTO is just a nicer car though.

The Cobras are raw, unrefined, and explosive fun with the instant torque. Add a pulley, exhaust and tune for $1500 and they are 450 hp at the wheels and should trap 117 to give you an idea on roll on power. I ran mine 3 passes with exhaust and filter on stock tune and it did 13.2 @ 111 on street tires, easy 2.0 sixty foot. They are heavy cars like the Buicks but do handle well and are fun on open track, yet harder on brake parts due to the weight. Mileage is about 20 hwy and 14 town. Prices are 15 to 20k for the average car and miles.

The LS2...yea I've owned an 05 GTO and they are nice especially for the prices of 15 to 20k now. Interior is real nice and back bucket seats are decent on comfort and room. I ran mine with headers, exhaust and filter and it did 13.6 @ 109. Weight similar to Cobras and Buicks, but same engine and mods in a Corvette and it would run 115 due to weight being low around 3200lb.

I've not had the vette at open track or quarter mile yet, but an 05-07 with LTs, and H/C/I will have 450 rwhp and "should" trap 120+mph. They are a nice touring refined feeling good handling car and all come with the targa top which is nice. Interior is average at best and even with the H/C/I they still get good mileage (driving sensibly) of 27 hwy and 17 town. They are really down in price with wholesale in lower 20s and prices at 25 to 30k.

You could find a nice V8 converted S-10 truck for probably under $5k

Or sometimes a V8 Vega for not alot of dough

3rd gen F bodies can be had cheap

Fox body Mustangs are a dime a dozen

'65-'70 Impalas can also be had reasonably priced, float like a boat and still have good power while carrying passengers...

In my neighbourhood, (your mileage may vary) high miles 86-95 mustangs are the 1st choice. They're light, very cheap, very easy to find parts for, and to work on. I'd take an early model hard top 5.0 fox body with no ground effects in a NY minute. You can get a decent one around here for 5 grand. Great cars in my opinion. Strong, and simple.
