hey guys it's been awhile. I just took the Chevelle out and noticed a problem. My 2004R is hunting between 3rd and 4th quite frequently. I'm thinking my TV cable may need a slight adjustment. Other than the hunting issue it's fine. Am I on the right track here?

Mine too hunts 3rd to 4th at about 60mph. Above 60 it is good. I have been told it is due to the converter( Art Carr 9" NLU ) but I honestly don't know. If I goose it at 60mph it will finally shift to 4th and stay there. HTH

I just noticed it yesterday so It's a new thing. From what I was reading on here last night it might also be a TC lockup issue. How do I go about finding out where the source of the problem is?

While overdrive is a great thing to have, too much of a good thing here is not beneficial. Most engines do not care to be "lugged", In my experience, trying to run anything tighter than a 2.7 ratio overall in OD is fruitless, using a higher stall converter just compounds the problem. If your engine is modified for increased performance it will also reduce the low rpm torque to the point that you need to give it more throttle to maintain speed-which the TV cable "reads" as needing a lower gear/unlocking converter.
There are mods you can "do" to keep the trans in OD at speed, but before starting, could use more info on car:
1, Make/Model/Year of car:
2, Engine Type/Size/Carbed or Fuelie/Mods done:
3, Rear Axle Ratio/Tire Size
4, Transmission Model(ie:700R4/200-4R/AOD/A500/A518,etc.)
5, Primary Use of Vehicle:

If you want a correct answer, we need correct info.

Kevin.

Kevin, this hasn't been an ongoing issue. I just noticed it for the first time yesterday.

No, maybe not, but if your having to back off the cable(which may let trans operate at lower than needed pressures) you will be introduced to a reliability concern. For the sake of curosity, what is your engine rpm in OD at 60 mph?

Kevin, engine RPM is at 1900-2000 in 4th at 60 and I have not moved the cable yet. I was wonder in the cable could have slipped, thus causing the problem or if the problem has to do with TCC lockup

Ok, thanks, looks like your running a 3.73-3.90(nice combo) it should be able to "hold" OD, but if converter lockup is cycling in and out that is controlled outside of transmission.
Easiest way of diagnosising the two is to disconnect the wire harness at the trans and drive the car, if the in-out-in feeling is gone the problem is with TCC controls, if still there it's in the cable/valve body control of 4th gear.

Thank you Kevin, I will disconnect the TCC wire (it's easy to get at) and see what happens :)

Pulled the TCC wire and problem is now gone. I'm going to check the TCC electrical circuit next. How can I check the 4th gear pressure switch for proper operation and the TCC solenoid for proper operation? Also I remember something about it not being good to operate a TC lockup car in non-lockup in 4th for long periods due to heat issues, am I correct?

Hey Kevin, Frank Hall over in Alamogordo, NM said to tell you "hi". Just saw him today picking up a 4L60 from him and told him you were on here. :)
