This is a damaged stator right?

... Is this a lock up unit? I haven't used it since 2001 or 2002

That is a stripped stator support, and it has the O ring on the input shaft so probably a lock up would have to pull pan to be sure.

x2 on the stripped stator. Would bet its non lock as the check ball capsule is removed from the input shaft.

Taking just the stator support out/off from pump is hARD to do. The torx screws are on there and like to strip b4 loosening.

Nothing hard about it if the correct size torx drive is used. Its A T27 and an impact driver should be used. The torx bolts can be replaced with hex head bolts if wanted. I like to verify zero runout in a lathe after installation of the stator support.

Is this some thing that can be done at home by a diy. Or do you have to take something like this to the trans shop? If so what is a ballpark price?

If the bolts start to strip you can smack the heads with a hammer to shrink female torx shape in the bolt head center and then use an impact screwdriver to get them out.Very easy if you take your time.I use 10 mm head replacement bolts from a 4r70w valve body hold down plate.

It is a lockup style with that input shaft, the stator splines being missing will cause it to dog off the line because the stator can't be held by the sprag so you don't get your higher stall speeds (even a stock TC needs the stator held to get whatever the stall speed is rated at, or it will be a lot lower).

The pump needs aligned when you reassemble it, unless you plan on replacing the stator shaft without pulling it all apart, never done that before cause I always check the pump gear and bushing, and replace the seal while your there.

For hte price a decent shop would charge to swap it,I would not take a chance, you can mess things up REAL bad and destroy the whole trans if its done incorrectly

Hi Larry,
Is there another style input shaft for 2004R? I don't think I have ever seen one.

No there isn't another style, but as you said:

I wanted to let him know it was a factory lockup, I should have just said they never made a factory non-lockup 2004R, and that the o-ring is neccessary to feed the convertor for lockup. But more importantly I was just trying to let him know it's not just a matter of pulling the pump and shoving it back in, and that he might want to get someone in the know to do it. Sorry if I missled anyone.

Actually, there is another style input shaft. I have one and the GM converter from a 2004R my brother in law picked up from a guy out of Colorado. It was supposedly a Pike's Peak racer and it is like the later model 4L60E converter with the large Oring behind the splines. I will take pics tomorrow and post them. One and only one I have seen in 22 years. Torque converter is a GM build with the watermarks on it and all.

Were the Input Shafts from 2004R's used with Diesel engines any different?
I know the Converters were, internal Poppet valves to release TCC on decelleration/torque reversal.
Watermarks??

I had never seen a 2004R behind a diesel, just the 700 so I am not sure. Water Marks are what GM called the little paint splotches they marked items with. If I remember correctly, this converter had yellow and light red maybe. It has been in my storage for over 2 years now. I will get some pics tonight and post them up.

The input that I have seen with the o-ring behind the slines is from a BMW. I do have a couple of them when the BMW OD Is used.

You will need a hydraulic press. The stator is pressed into the pump body.

Wow. Did not know that. Didn't have time to take pics. Will do for sure tomorrow.

Not a 2004R but the early 700 small bell trannies had the o-rings behind the splines, not sure if anyone is confusing the 2 trannies
