car is in the body shop and seems my roof is pitted, no obvious rust holes, just small pitting everywhere and shop recommends replacing for 100% perfect job, otherwise they can chemically treat it and use epoxy on the roof. will post a pic to see what you guys recommend. not sure if anyone actually makes a new roof for our cars????

This sounds odd to me... I've never heard of a shop replacing a roof for mild rust. Sounds to me like they are trying to get some serious cash out of you... There is no reason why they cannot remove the rust, and then prep... I'm not a body man by any means, but I've spent many hours in paint and body shops, and this just deeply bothers me that they would ever suggest cutting the roof off. Almost any time an entire roof has to be replaced on a new car it gets totaled if you catch my drift...

What you just said bothers me enough that I would highly advise you to get a second opinion from another reputable shop.

yeah i have to go talk to them tom, just got a quick call. i think hes being a perfectionist, new is always better, but im sure if i can blast it, treat it, and prep it on both sides it will be alright. without the media blast, im not so sure.

Check with G Body Parts, he has supplied roof panels for GN repairs in the past.

If it's pitted that bad was it under water? The metal's really thin compaired to earlier cars and a good leading would do great in this case. Pretty simple to do as well and cheaper.:)

treated and epoxy will be fine, Just make sure it's blasted before they do anything else. I've done that 1000's of times. As long as it's blasted, treated and epoxyed, it will be good to go for a long time. Changing the roof is a waste of time and money IMO. I'm a painter BTW :)

I had a gn which was sun burned through the paint on the roof and was rusty, kind of the like yours the way it sounds, just pitted. I took it into a media blasting place and they blasted it with glass. They said it was the only way to get all of the rust out of the pits. It is important to get all of the rust out, I have seen rust stripped, treated with rust inhibator and epoxy and rust came through it in about 6 months. the guy is just trying to do a good job.

A lot of roofs ! We have a NOS roof here as well. Generally a good original paint roof will work & be a lot cheaper.
Blasting it is the best & least expensive way.
