Looking at getting some estimates from local shops, and was wondering what the r134 conversion cost other people. I need a new compressor anyway, so I might as well get it done. How much was yours? Any tips on a good but inexpensive compressor for it?

TIA.

You have to change the nipple where you put the 134a in. I think they cost $8 or $9, but there all over the place for nothing in a junkyard. I think 134 costs about $5 or $6 a can. You'll need about three cans. :D

local auto parts store 29.99 for the kit with fittings, hoses, and 134a...

I used one of those kits on my daughter's honda.. Worked well, I made sure to pull -30hg vacuum for about an hour too. That is very important. And *I* would replace all the seals, whether you need to break the connection or not.

Also, make sure the condenser is squeaky clean, and there's no leafs or crap down inside the blower housing. Hell, you can get a new Siemens blower motor from Autozone for $14.99 and no core charge, might as well replace that too, and while you have the motor out clean the side of the evaporator you can reach, vacuum it out. Be careful, the fins are sharp!

My car wasn't blowing very much air, turned out to be the motor, now it works great.

Also - you can get a brand new GM compressor from GMPartsDirect for $222.00, GM PN 1134349

I bought a nice used unit from a friend, but I've heard if you are getting a new one, the way to go is genuine GM..

I was going to say that. Buddy of mine did that on his car about 4 years ago and has had no trouble with leaks. I think the whole compressor and new seals thing is a load of bung!

I did the 30 dollar kit.. Works like a champ..New Compressor????NOT!

put the fittings on and replace the old with the new.. Remember to pay someone 100 bux to VACUUM out the old so it is not released into the atmosphere and destroys our ozone.. ;)

How does $650 sound...:( :( :( :( :(

Just came back from the shop and that's what it cost, mainly because my compressor was shot. A new one cost me $250, not bad, but it was the labor that killed me. Coulda swapped it myself and saved enough for a nice little vacation, but I got no time and it's 100+ degrees every day now, so I bit the bullet.

It was the first time I've let anybody touch my car since I finished building it. I picked a good shop but I'll be walking a little lighter till next payday.

$32 kit at Kfart. Did to tonight. Got nice cold air now.

It's funny. I just had my AC charged up yesterday, and decided to go with good old R12, since all of the AC components are built for that anyway. I had one of the best street rod shops in town do it, and including labor and three pounds of freon ($$$), got out for just under $250. Nice and cold! And no leaks, so I should be good to go for another 5-8 years...

I for one am a believer that not replacing seals and other components designed for an R12 system is a mistake. I've had other TRs charged with R134A, and not had the good results some of you have gotten. Maybe I shoulda had the Wannermeister do it for me instead, eh Bryan? :D
