I have mixed feelings on this issue. I'd like to see a rollback of some of the other taxes we pay if a new tax is going to be created. You're already supposed to keep track of what you purchase sales tax free online and pay the sales tax at the end of the fiscal year in some states. Maybe two or three people in the country do this. If your populace is now spending 10% of their income online (out of state) that's a significant loss for local municipalites. Lost tax revenue either has to be replaced or services in your area that rely on sales tax revenue will need cut.
Sure, it's easy to say "screw the little guy" but local business supports your children's ball teams, pays for your local improvements, hires people in your area, sponsors local programing, and local charities. I'm not saying buy the 18 dollar flashlight from Joe Bob's Hardware because he's local. I'm saying if he's the same price as online adjusted to shipping cost, and the only difference is sales-tax then you're better off buying local.
I'm all for increased sales tax, and regression of state and federal taxes. Eventually, this can become the 'Fair' Tax touted by many, but supported by few in our government. Then the leeches of society can't avoid taxes, and the tax is proportional to how much you spend.
