I think I heard that per international shipping laws Merchant Sailors aren't allowed to be armed or carry weapons. Has anyone else heard this?

Even so, why not just line the outside of the ship with razor-wire? Then when they get stuck just leave their corpses there to discourage the next group that comes along.

its called something like "Unarmed passage" Its a law set forth for international waters so it doesnt tie up the ships at foreign ports getting searched all the time etc etc etc..insert more dumb laws here_________________________

With take last year being 150 million dollars. How many pirates at the most could have been involved for the entire year? Lets say 500. Collectively took in 150 million. Do the math its a substantial payoff per pirate. It would stand to reason anyone with brains, would be happy with their cut and split. Flown to a better place in the world rather than push the envelope knowing that someday its gonna end and the end may not be pretty.

I think now they have awakened the sleeping giant - US NAVY

It has to be a real test for our Navy to sit and play the waiting game.

The reason the shipping companies are just paying the ransoms is so far the pirates haven't killed anyone. They have figured out if the pirates killed the sailors then the families of the sailors would sue and the ransom would be less than the cost of a trial and the settlement. Once the pirates kill someone the ransom game will be over and it will be open season on them.

There is no doubt we could just wipe them out but at this point they are trying to save the life of the captain by negotiations. If that doesn't happen or if the mother ships send in more little boats the shooting will start.

They are teams of 4-10 guys, it's not like they have a huge base that we could bomb...Maybe we can just bomb all the big mansions in the Puntland area of Somalia, this is where these pirates are mostly from and they are supposedly building huge mansions to show off their new found booty.

You make a good point since the situation has risen to this level with an American hostage. However, in hindsight this pirate issue should have never been allowed to reach these porportions. With todays world wide economy in the dumps to allow what has to be a small band of pirates to collectiveliy gain 150 million in a one years time is absurb.

In other words the parties concerned have been slow to act and now it is drawn more world wide attention.

Unforturnately there is little to shoot at. That boat they're in is all closed in and there would be no clear shot at all 4. I'm very sure there are several plans for overtaking that boat if they have to. It's cool that the Captain has tried to escape, too bad he didn't get farther way so the destroyer could have blasted the boat.

Seems one French national was killed today when French forces overtook a boat the terrorists had seized!

Drop some Navy seals in the water under cover of darkness, puncture their lifeboat so it slowly sinks so they have to escape it and save themselves, no boat, no cover, then pick them off one by one and hopefully the captain can separate himself from his captives. Where is Steven Seagal???

Some hostage "think tank experts" are saying that the pirates are "businessmen" and are smart enuf to realize that getting dead does nothing for them.
If operating on that theory is logical, then coralling all the ships involved, could give the navy the upper hand.
