How much end play is normal with flywheel and balancer on engine. I have my tranny out due to a bad sprag in the coverter. When I put a pry bar behind fly wheel I get about 1/6 to1/8 inch movement. This is a built motor with 3,000 miles. If thrust brg. is bad/ can you replace in car? Thanks, Bob.

I would want a dial indicator reading to know exactly what the endplay was. 1/8 is way too much. 3-8 thousands comes to mind as the spec. Yes, you should be able to change the bearings in the car, but not real easily.

Hi Bob-
Sorry for not calling back about the convertor, been busy.

I would find out if the excess wear on the thrust bearing was caused by the transmission....

Maybe someone with some more knowledge could chime in.

Remove engine...

If the thrust bearing is bad [1/8" play says it is] within 3000 miles, then the cause must be found. Most likely is crank thrust surface or install problem? Unless a converter change was made at the same time, doubt if that would be the culprit.

Very unlikely you will find the cause or repair the problem with the engine in the car.

It's not hard to change the main bearings in the car, but if you're having a problem thrust bearing problem at 3K miles, it will just happen again. Maybe the play is less. You might want to check it with the proper tools. Why did you check the thrust? Are you having some indications of a problem?
