Does anyone know what the going rate is of a muncie 4 speed? My father has one out of a 66 GTO that another individual is looking to potentially buy. He bought it many moons ago, and hasn't much of an idea what they sell for now days. He is just looking for a fair price.

Thanks
Nate

$300-800 depending on condition. Most of them are hammered to hell and fixing them properly is expensive. If it was a 1969 660 case casting with a factory hurst shifter and passenger side speedometer with a Norwood OH stamp it would be worth $1500-2000. All the dopes creating fake SS camaros want that year, casting, stamping

Not rebuilt Brian agot about the right price. Rebuilt is some $$$. Do a search for kajunjon. He's near me and I've seen his going for closer to the $1800 range and he builds a good tranny. eJon should be able to give you some pricing info.

Ive got the right price. I can get you all you want for $1300 remanufactured and guaranteed from Reeds in CT. I used to build transmissions for him. I've probably remanufactured at least 500 early four speeds in my life. An 010 Muncie out of a Pontiac is not a popular unit.

It is a popular unit if you are restoring a Pontiac. The tailshaft is not the same as a Chevrolet application. If the gears are good and everything is there it is an easy 500.00

Passenger side speedometer Muncie's outsell Pontiac ones 10 to 1 or more. Pontiac also had a long tailhousing/mainshaft application. I've never heard of anyone needing the long shaft version and I've followed closely since the mid 90's. I agree with you if the gears are all good and the countershaft bore isn't blown out on the case. Ive paid $800-1000 plenty of times for certain used ones like the one i described in my prior post. Usually 10 spline input 69 dated Norwood stamped units. Finding used Muncie's in good condition is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack. They are so badly beaten the case is shot as well as at least one speed gear, both synchro assemblies, and the shift forks are almost always worn too much to be used in a remanufactured trans. I've remanufactred plenty of "rebuilt" muncie's. Big difference between the two terms imo.

Great.. I didnt know these fetched such a pretty penny.. I have 2 that have not been used since the 70s so now Im going to go get some pics and see what he heck they are. Any site that explains ID and value? Or should I just post my findings here? I bet I will get a better answer here...

i have personally seen brian work on tons of these trannys i bet he could practically do it with his eyes closed. pics wont show things like a loose cluster pin. also close ups of all the little engaging teeth WOULD BE NEEDED TO HELP GIVE A GOOD VALUE . etc..... i have seen/ helped pull a few of these apart over at REEDS CLASSIC 4 SPEEDS.

M21 or M22 ??

He said 1966 there was no m22 order code in 1966. Probably a 2.52:1 1st m20. Unless it was ordered with a 4.10 ring and pinion it's likely an m20. M21 is a 2.2:1 first and sucks without a lot of rear gear. I'd want 4.56 minimum if I was using an m21

Pontiac Muncies here. 1966 Catalina/Bonneville long shaft. One of the rarest and most undesirable muncies and oddly enough the only passenger side speedometer drive used in a Pontiac that came with a Muncie. Other is a 1964 out of a Pontiac. Easily noted by the rounded boss on top of the case. 1965 looks the same except the boss is square like the one on the Catalina trans.

Small countershaft on left. Large on right. Small output shaft driver side speedo Pontiac tailshaft housings almost as far as the eye can see. Cores, bare cases, etc.

Aftermarket Auto Gear M22 with wide ratio gear set (2.56:1 1st gear). These aftermarket replica transmissions use a much superior casting in all locations and are of tremendous value to anyone who wants a nice transmission that can take just about anything any early naturally aspirated engine could throw at it.

 look at all those parts............. is that heaven?

That's is like 2% of what he has for cores, etc and about .01% of what I've handled in my life.
