My gf asked me this question and one occasion in particular mind. When I was about 9 years old my older brother graduated from Granada Hills HS in SFV. He was always in competition with the neighborhood fellas his age. There was a guy named Ron who lived around the corner from us who had the fastest car in the hood. He drove an old RX3 with a serious rotary in it that was built by MazdaTrix. He would always outrun my brothers 1776cc powered Bug. As a graduation gift my dad bought him a brand new 87 GN. I remember him pulling into the driveway playing RUN DMC loud as hell with a grin on face. About two months later he outran that little rotary with parts ordered from a Postons mail order catalog. I still have that old catalog in my library. I acquired that GN from my older bro in a trade. I traded a 95 Impala SS for that car and moved to the Bay Area. Sadly that GN was stolen, stripped, and burned. The only thing I have left from that car are the original rims...they are on my TType. Everyone I know tells me "You have the wrong rims on your TType". They dont understand....those rims are a rolling tribute to my big bro who introduced me to one of the baddest cars in American history. Thanks Grant F Alexander...I love you big bro Rest In Peace.

I have always loved these cars, but when I was a young Lad I had a 1990 Notchback with Mods my wife was with me we pulled up next to a 87 GN older guy with his wife and another couple in the back seat ,well lets just say he taught me a lesson after that day I told my wife I will buy one some day:biggrin:

I have a similar story to blackmontes, not as touching as terik's story by any means... I had a '79 Z28 that I thought was pretty fast, I had rebuilt the motor and added quite a few go fast parts in between 11th and 12th grade. One day at lunch my friend spotted a GN and commented about how bad ass those cars were supposed to be..this was '87 my senior year.
Then one night cruising around the local strip I happened upon a GN at a red light, remembering how my friend said they were bad ass...well it was a hot blonde chick driving it, light turns green and she spanked me...then I said wow, I've got to get one of those some day....4 years later in '91 I bought one and still have it.

Ditto here, I have told it here many times so I will not bore the long time viewers again:biggrin:

Senior year in High School I had a brand new 87 Mustanf GT 5 Speed, one night a guy from another town I knew came up beside me in his new Black Regal, I thought it was sharp and all but I had a 5.0!!!

Needless to say he waxed my arse, let me drive it that night and I have been hooked on the twisted 6 every since:wink:

How easy it is to work on them, how user friendly all the maintenance manuals, are, the common sense approach to the brake system, how inexpensive replacement parts are, the plethora of aftermarket vendors who are doing R&D for new parts, the awesome long lasting quality of the original paint job, the quality of the driver's side header...

More respect then love.

My first so called "race car" was a stock 78 Z28 and everynite, especially on weekends My friends and I were always in the area of Harlem ave between Grand all the way north to lawrence looking for a street races. I would always be willing to line up with the mustangs and irocs, but the one car that I never wanted a piece of was an 87 GN that was often out cruising around. Rumors had that car as silly fast and only raced for big money (which I didnt have). The car had dark tinted windows and an ANS performance sticker on the back window other than that I knew nothing for sure. By the time I got my 80 z28 with the bigblock and spray(11.50 car), the GN was never around so I never did race it. If memory serves me rite that was sometime in the early 90's. I often find myself telling people that if I only knew then what I know about these cars now, I would have never messed around with big blocks and 4.10 gear ratios.

The reasons:
Pins you to the seat
Quiet for the power they have
Classy but mean appearance
Not seen all the time
Holds more value that most cars seen at the track.
I understand how they work.
Carbs and V-8 are boring to me
Nitrous is too inconsistant
They get you sex!

They get you sex!
hmm..I think we need more details on that one :)
My wife hated the GN when I got it (we were dating back then)..she still always wanted to ride in the Monte SS I had at the time I got the GN.....she understands now :)

when i was a boy in 86, dad bought the car after walking from the dealer for not getting delivery of his gnx, drove off the lot with a 94 code 86GN (whole story behind that but not the point here), anyways a mile down the road I was wanting to push all the touch button climate controlls, play with the sun roof n the radio but my dad quickly put a stop to that. so a few miles into the drive home @ a light he roasted a brand new vette with no plates like our 86GN, after 60-70 he had slowed down, relaxed his arms used the center counsel to crack his fingers and turned to me to say 'this is why I bought this buick', opened the electric sunroof, pushed a few 'knight rider looking and sounding' buttons near this radio with a eq table to play with, then the ....bubbooobble and the heater turned on. and he just cruised it home.

yea I became a darth vader whore @ that moment though. I was a kid and I thought for sure that vette was going to smoke my dad. pretty sweet

Can't say they really grew on me. Was a freshman in HS in 1987 and fell in love with them pretty much as soon as they were released. Just could never really afford one till I got a real job. Well, got a real job now and the rest is history.....;)

Yea, that pretty much sums it up I guess.

I bought my first one and thats all it took. In 86 i was only 11 and knew exactly what these cars were, we called them jiffy lube cars :)

Well anyway, in 1985 my dad bought a 85 grand prix... fully loaded, but the guys at pontiac were telling him to buy one of those black buicks, dad was a pontiac purest and wanted nothing to do with a buick..... at that time...

So i bought mine on super bowl sunday 1997 ?, it was in the newspaper for 5000.00 and had over 100K on it.

I had to pick my dad up at the airport a few days after i bought the car, so i took the 86 t-type to go and pick him up... at first he thought it was the 85 grand prix, they were the same color and body design...

He noticed it was a t-type, and said.... hmmm turbo huh?
Yup :)
Is it as fast as they say they area?
Yup :)
Can i drive it?
Nope! :)

Now ive had over 20 of them and 3 ttas, currently have 5 of them and 1 tta.

Dads got a WE4 of his own :)

I have always loved the Regals from 82 on up. In 84 I saw a T-Type and thought "THAT is way cool" and then in 85 I saw my first GN. I wound up being the 3rd owner of that very car and I was hooked. I have to agree about the "they get you sex" part but to me "they get me flirts and offers of sex". :D

I didnt get it either the first time I saw one (the guy was showing me his collection of 8-9 of them in 1987) then I went for a ride, way more convincing, then I drove it...SOLD! The difference in liking one, and loving one IMO is driving it vs looking or maybe just riding in one. They drive so nice, easy to go fast, very controlable, and you feel like you are driving a time machine.

always wanted one

thanks to my mom buying her car from tyson buick about 2 miles from my HS when i was a sophmore. of course the paperwork and stuff took awhile so while relaxing in the showroom i laid my eyes on one inside. always had the fever but never acted on it. finally broke down and bought one, plus the turbo gauge going crazy is a selling point too if your in the market. makes the seat real nice and comfy.

Tooo damn funny, almost worth a sig

I personally fell in love with the GN after owning a few Monte SS's. The GN was the "SUPER FAST" G Body that nobody could afford in my area. There was a guy in a small town near me that owned one. He lived next to my best friend and when we were outside working on our four wheelers, sometimes we heard a car spinning the tires. Ended up seeing it one day and low and behold, it was a GN!!! This guy literally never drove the car, he just went out in the road and did doughnuts! I always thought it would be awesome to own one someday. Well as time went on, I finally bought one. It made my Monte feel like a slug! That guys doing burouts was talked about by everybody in my High School. The mysterious Grand National that would smoke anything out there. After a while, the guy ended up selling the car to a co-worker of mine who then traded it off for a pick up to some guy and I never saw the car again.

What made me fall in love with turbo buicks? 1QUICK6'N'K.C.'s punk ass did. Im certain I would have a lot more money if it wasnt for the ride in a gray 86 T-type he describes above. Ahh, but who am I kidding, what else would I spend my money on?????????????:D

I got to test drive a GN when they were new and WOW! Just couldn't swing it at the time. But I was driving my 2nd Regal at the time. I've always seemed to keep a Buick of some sort around since then. 9 more Buicks, 4 of em Regal's, including 2 turbo cars later, I've yet to get that GN. Someday tho...
