Just installed a 2004r transmission in my 66 skylark every thing went good , 2 questions ,why does some publications say you should have the lock-up come in under 45mph, will this cause wear for me if I have it come in at about 48mph? second I have a 2-1 clunk when I approach a stop?

2004r (2000 stall conv,no yo-yo shift-kit, fairbanks servo, hardend stater support, b&M lock-up controller with vac switch in-line, 3.90 posi)

any help would be great!!

The converter can lock anywhere from 40mph to 60mph with no problems. It's more of a matter of preference than anything. The clunk is probably a calibration issue. It's probably going into 1st at too high of a speed. I see you are running pretty large gears. What transmission are you using ie. code letters located on the tag on the right side near the tail shaft. If it's not a performance calibrated trans like a BRF, OZ, or CZ, it maybe difficult to get things shifting exactly the way you want.

not sure what its out of the tag was gone from my core, I think I seen og on the vb, I seen on other posts that the large servo could cause this??? I took the small spring out of the gov. and seems to up shift ok 15-24-35 at a good clip could to much TV pressure cause a clunk, pressure rises right off idle and the other pressures are good, does chirp the tires when I put it too the floor , wot shift point is 4500 rpm

I would say it's definitely a calibration issue. An "OG" trans is from an Oldsmobile with small gears. You are running large gears which the "OG" is not calibrated for. That's why your shift points were way low and you removed the spring in the governor to try to compensate. There are some things you can do in the trans to try and soften it a little on the down shift but it's hit or miss at best. Either just put up with the "clunk" or get yourself a different valvebody and matching governor from a performance trans that was calibrated for larger gears like an OZ.

The clunk is the 3-2 shift 2-1 you don't feel at all because coasting down you are over running the roller clutch & free wheeling unless you are in manual Lo.

Does the Fairbanks servo have a cushion spring?
If it's got a cushion spring already the clunk can be tuned out, or just live with it. You could try a couple clicks looser on the TV & see what happens.

OG isn't the best calibration, but it's about the worst.

Are you getting 4500 WOT shifts in all gears, or just 1-2?
Are you saying you have no springs on the gov. now or just 1 spring?

just running I spring on the light side of the govenor, what about the cushing spring and some other Ideas I could try, If I lighten up the light side that I left the spring would this raise my wot shifts?

what carb are you using? & do you have the t.v. cable geometry correct? i have seen this many times on 2004r or 700r4 swaps. the kickdown hookup on a quadrajet for a 350 trans will hook up but you will never get it fined tuned. same with holly & others  compare it to a late quadrajet from a monte or olds that had a 2004r and you will see what needs to be done.

Yup, what's the 2-3 shift at? How high do you want to go?
Really if would be a lot easier to find another VB. Unless you want to make the OG work like I did, stubbornness I guess.

I would like it to shift at around 5200 rpm, I am running my stock carter afb 4 v, had my tv set up made by my machinists at work on the cnc and mill, there are just like the ones on the plans that been floating around, also I have the carb tv stud back at 22 percent and at this percent I have right angles with throttle shaft and cable.

The Fairbanks servo has you remove the cushion spring and this causes the 3-2 downshift clunk. You can't feel the difference in the 1-2 by leaving the spring on or off, so leaving it on is a much better setup as it doesn't cause undue stress to the band anchor or pin.

Just re-install the cushion spring back on it and see where you are at. If you need one I have extras.

not sure if there is a cushing spring borrowed a tool from the tranny guys at work to depress the servo so I can get the inside retainer out I will try this sunday, also what spring would you recomend I think there 3, I am going to drill 3-1/8" holes in the light side of govoner and leave the orig. spring in it is this in your opinion aggressive or should just drill 2? running castrol multi purpose atf that say cert. dex III

just pulled off servo cover and there was no cushing o a spacer that comes with other styles of these servos would you recomend a cushing spring also the orig pin was used why does the other companies besides fairbanks use a new pin? how can I check if length is correct? thaks allot!!!!!
