With my D5 and ET Streets:
the most boost I could ever hold was 2-3 psi..over that and rear tires began spinning

With the ATI converter and ET Streets:
about 5 psi was all I could hold..

With my new Yank 3000 stall and 215/65's:
can hold at least 7-8 psi and probably more...I just stopped there

Same engine mods, same brakes (not hot), same everything except converter and the 215/65's.

What is taking place?? And is this a good thing??

Thanks, Bob

Brakes holding??

Bob, sounds like there are 2 things affecting the boost level...
1. The converters have different stall speeds w/ the D5 being the lowest.
2. The converters have different torque mult. ratios.

Which 1 works the best overall??

Thanks for the reply Chuck...was wondering if my post was in invisible ink...lol

Best ever D5 60' was 1.805 and then only once... with 2nd best being 1.85.

ATI best 60' was 1.78 and they never could get it so that it wouldn't allow engine to rev above 5000 rpm thru the entire 1/4 mile distance. 2 different and a third planned converters...every conversation I had with them eventually got around to how successful they were with big blocks, 4:56 rear ends, 7000 rpm, etc. Their last answer to my need was a suggestion to change differential ratio. I knew it would be a development project with them, but instead of them developing a converter for my car they were developing my car into something that would work with one of their converters...they just didn't know which one when I bailed. I've heard they make an excellent converter...apparently you need to rev 6000+ rpm in order to make one work for you though.

Haven't been to the track with the Yank yet, but I'm encouraged.

Bum recs from the converter geniuses

Bob, had the SAME problems w/ ATD. [Aka: Hipster]
They claimed that the converter order was placed by my tranny guy as "send me 1 just like the last 1". The "last one" was a BBC on N2O and at 632 C.I. [Top dragster at 1500#!!]
After a city drive in which I found tranny temps at 375*, I got really nervous and took it out. It was out 3 more times and is now on it's way to TCI for an inspection to see WTF is going on.
I went from 50 rpm drops on shifts to a max of 450...[ Was looking for 1000]. The car would leave like a rocket and then it was all over...
hell, I even sent them a data log set to work from and they STILL couldn't do it right... Pissed me off for $800.. Tranny guy said TS too..
Now have an A/C and all indications are, IF I ever get the car in 1 piece long enough to turn up the wick, I should see some 9'zzzz!

Fun ain't it??

Speaking of WTF...the converter I didn't mention was an AC...wouldn't install. After about 2 weeks of trying to figure it out (w/numerous calls to their tech line) I realized the cover was bottoming out on the trans spline....cover was about .4" too shallow. Newly purchased cast cover for all non-lock converters which fit evrything but 2004R's. Their initial response was to cut .75" off of the trans spline...NOT! Gotta give them credit though...they gave us our money back. This was right after they moved their production to Tx about 1.5-2.0 years ago.

There were other visible quality concerns with the AC, but for their engineering staff to have missed this and then customers have to figure it out for them (a very unknowledgable customer in my case) it worries me and I've stayed away since. Have heard that their quality has been up and down since then. Dan is a super guy on the phone and seems very knowledgeable, but the guys sittin to his left and right sure don't (or didn't) know squat...that's tech support??

I'd never removed my trans before my switch from D5 to AC, then to ATI, and now Yank. It's been R&R'd 5 times now and I'm becoming an expert!! Just what I wanted to be...lol.

Guess I've been spoiled to date. After all, how hard is it to bolt up a V4, turbo, downpipe, and injectors and be near the 11's?? Maybe if I had to do more wrenching to get there, the trans R&R wouldn't be something that I hate so much... :)

Hi Bob, where do you go when you take your car to the strip?
Take care, Kip

Hello Kip, how have you been? I've never been anywhere except IRP on their Tuesday night street legal (test & tune) nights...about 40 miles away.

By the way,my rear main seal is dry as a bone...all because you let me borrow a rear cap so that I could make cap removal tool...which was definitely needed. You couldn't have been more help if you'd have been under the car with me :)

Would enjoy hooking up with you some evening either at IRP or in the LOU area.

Thanks again, Bob

Bob let me know when you are going racing sometime and maybe we can get together. Great news on the rear main by the way.
See ya, Kip
