Ok guys, I had to pull the intake on my H/A 85 GN...don't ask. But now I have the problem solved. So I have the stock intake off, and my heads are very MILDLY ported. ie: they smoothed the ports where they meet the intake. The intake has not been touched. What kind of benifits would I see if I port matched the intake?? Jerryl, Brad, 231---chime in here.:D :D
Here is my setup:

Stock block bored .30 over
froged speed pro pistons
212-212 comp roller cam/lifters
new stock turbo
42.5# inj
Turbo Tweak chip
87 ECM/MAF
stock air box
adj regulator
hot wired walbro pump
Stock up/down pipe
2-1/2 stainless cat back
hi flow converter

I can tell you that you should do it now with the current state of your engine. I do have flow bench testing charts from my car which I can send you. As I recall the flow increased 37% both on the intake and exhaust. Let me know if you want to see the test reports. Brad

Get the ports open, as far and deep as you can.
Ported intake has been in the 10's!

Just be carefull, some areas will break through.
If you do, JB weld works VERY well!

Also, be sure you measure the intake location/placement.
You already know all this, but you will be surprised how far things are off on these motors!

There is a thread in the general section about alignment with nails.
I used a very similar setup about 3 years ago when I did mine.

Thanks guys. I'm sure I will be porting it before I reinstall it. Anyone else have good results with porting a H/A intake??

like posted above stock ported intakes have been 10's on a 4.1 and low 11's on 3.8's both jamie and i are running low 11's on a ported stocker. i hope to hit the 10's on mine but not sure if i can do it wilthout a t-brake.

At the least, you can remove some weight from the top of the motor.......good luck.

Cool. So here's another question: I understand the TT chips disable the EGR...right? So can I remove the entire valve then?? Could I use a block off plate? If so, where do I get one? And how do I block off the threaded port on the back of the intake??

yes you can remove the EGR system. what i did since it was off is welded the holes shut and grind smooth. both the egr and the hole in the back of the intake.

Good luck!! I will probably do mine this winter when it is "sleeping", lol. Post some pics before/after when you get done with it man!!!

+1.......this is the best way to do it.

So I assume the intake was the problem with the #3 piston?

Pretty sure. I don't know if I should admit this...but I used a Victor valley pan gasket when I reassembled the motor. It's a POS all metal one with no fiber coating on it. It's no wonder it wasn't sealing. Lesson learned...save a buck, cost yourself three days and another $50!! Oh well on the bright side, I get to port the intake now!!:D Thanks a bunch for the idea...you were right on target!!;) YOU THE MAN!!

No prob dude! I really dont know too much about motors but thats one thing I have heard a few times! It's amazing what a guy picks up after reading over and over and over on this board!

Not trying to hi jack the thread , but can anyone tell me an approximate price to port the heads and intake??? I live close to Weber racing here in Ohio and want to get this done over the winter just no idea what the charge would be??

heads it really depends on what you have done. intake 150

I agee 100% with Brent. I paid out the ass for port matched heads and intake. Larger stainless valves, springs, EGR removal etc. $1600. This was done by a Buick drag racing expert. It can be done alot cheaper. Do some homework. My 2 cents. Brad

i think i paid 1500 for the works on my heads. best money ever spent.

Kind of a stupid question, but would their be a big power increase with ported heads and intake on a car with the stock headers and downpipe?

"Big" is a relative term.
On the IC'd cars, 100HP may be big, but on a HA, 50HP is big! :D
If you are talking about a stock set-up, I would add alky long before I port the heads. Alky = More boost = FUN! JMO

Here are the before pics:
