Been chasing oil smell and a leak on new stroker. Fixed the pcv issue and no more oil down the valve cover. Cleaned everything up and went for a drive. No more oil smell. Got up this morning and drove to my dealership and right when I pulled in I smelt oil again. Put it in the air and front of the motor is wet along with oil pan and cross member. Probably crank seal which I installed. Had to just walk away. Then got my airless paint sprayer set up to paint my deck today and broke it so I decided to find a bar stool. Loving life today.

Sorry to hear. But yeah, it's not worth getting frustrated over things out of your control sometimes. Enjoy your day, even more so enjoy that beer!:)
 
I just put my motor back together and had a couple oil leaks. The oil was all down low, so I was confident everything up top was good. Everything dry above the oil pan.

I found a leaky oil pump cover gasket (could see oil drip on the cover bolts) and leaky oil pan gasket when all was said and done. I had the tranny dust shield off, everything dry around the rear main. I replaced the oil pump cover gasket on the car, stopped that leak and when I still had more oil went for the pan.
Used the Earl Brown method of soaking the gasket first in oil. I actually did the Earl Brown cover blue print when building the engine (thanks Earl), but in my hast did not soak the first gasket. As a side note, the gasket I had in house for a replacement was 2 thou thicker than the gasket and TA Mylar shim I had on the pump when it was leaking. Hot idle oil PSI went from 25 to 20 with the additional 2 thou. So OK, comes right up with RPM.
The oil pan gasket, had a felpro rubber, maybe I torqued it too much (I can't drink as much beer as Earl when assembling engines), it leaked like a sieve. Replaced with a cork gasket from Kirban, 8 ft/lbs torque. Drove around, leaked a little, retorqed. No more leaks, that called for a beer.
Hope this helps in tracking it down. Now I have an exhaust leak to fix.
 
I hope I get as lucky as you. I have oil up by the crank seal and the front of the pan. I also have oil on the intercooler bracket passenger side under the oil filter. I bought my timing cover assembled by Earl and no leaks around oil pump. Can't figure out how the oil is getting on the intercooler bracket? Turbo drain tube is dry and no obvious leaks at the turbo feed block. The 1" nut to the right of the oil filter was a tad loose, gave it an 1/8 turn but no visible oil drip but might have been the cause of the oil on the intercooler bracket?

After we put the engine in the car the next morning when I had the car in the air I noticed a drip of oil on the front pan bolt. I had loosened the driver valve cover to attach the wire loom and figured oil ran down the engine finding it's way there. For the first 200 miles I had a small drip under the inspection cover and the pan gasket looked moist so I checked pan bolts and snugged them up. Gradually this leak has gotten worse to the point I'm not driving the car until it's fixed. Hopefully we it's a simple deal. We are going to hook up a shop vac in a valve cover and see if we can find the leak before I start tearing everything apart.

The odd part is the timing cover under the crank seal is dry but I see oil sitting in the seal area under the crank.

LOL I finally gave up on fixing oil leaks on the GN. I get the motor nice and dry and I get away with it for a month max before something else pops up. Mine leaves a couple drops a month now and I call that a huge success.
 
The timing cover stud/bolt that the intercooler bracket is on penetrates to the crankcase I think, I would pull it and put some sealer on the threads. Not likely to be a large source, but could be why it is wet with oil. Maybe the fuel pump blank off also. Oil leaks suck, I just keep wiping everything clean to try and figure out where it is running from, and try eliminating the next likely possibility. If it is just a few drips I might let it go for a while. I had a small 2" diameter puddle after parking in the garage.
 
I found one huge source of the leak!

Decided to put UV dye in the oil and the leak is at the fuel pump block off plate for sure. May have a small leak at the back of the pan?

Easy fix so I'm a little relieved but still knocking on wood.
 
It was either Rick Elam or Heath Elmer who gave me the best advice regarding leaks in TR's. If you simply drain the fluids it will not leak anymore. ;)
 
I've got a giant oil catch pan under mine. I found it at Walmart one day. It's sized perfect for buicks.
 
Buicks don't leak oil .......................they mark there territory ;) Mine sweats a little but I look at it as rust proofing:confused:
