I'm in the process of repairing a rusty brake line in my Jeep. I'm wondering how many people have done this type of flaring and if they have had any problems. I have been practicing on some 3/16" brake line and having a difficult time doing consistent good flares. It appears it goes bad on the first flare where it won't depress flat. I borrowed a tool(appears decent quality) from a friend and have followed all the directions. I have tried on larger tubing and it worked fine. I think tomorrow I'm gonna get the one NAPA has For Sale and give it another go.

Thanx

Make sure you only push the line thru the tool to the bottom ridge of the double flare collet. It sounds like you're pushing the line thru too far, this will cause the line to "bend over" when you go for the first half of the flare.

I have a Mastercool hydraulic tool that I absolutely LOVE. I can do a double flare in about 20 secs with it. I do a LOT of brake lines in my shop. The tool also does bubble and push lock fittings.

I think the trick to the double flare, especially on small diameter tubing, is that you need to knife edge the inside of the tube before doing the first flare.

If you don't do this, the pipe will just push out of the clamp.
