Kensington Plans Veterans' Day Celebration

The annual Veterans' Day parade and barbecue to honor our veterans will be held Saturday, Nov. 10. The theme for the parade is "Remember Vets--Young and Old" It's not to early to be planning floats or entries from your organizations or churches to make the parade more festive. The Sons lf the American Legion who host and plan the event are busy rebuilding the serving stands and cook shack.

Many small towns didn't do much in the way of celebrating Armistice Day, but there were always a few like Emporia that did the day proud. I remember Kensington, Kan., always had a huge free barbecue luncheon and parade on Armistice Day, and then in the afternoon, the high school football team would play a rival school. People would flock from miles around to attend the free luncheon and game. More people would attend that one game than attended all the games the local high school played during the year. In fact, many of the other small towns in the county ignored the day so that their residents could attend the Kensington celebration. I don't know when the tradition began, but I attended before the end of World War II, and it continued long after the day was renamed Veterans Day.
