Well, I wont be buying anymore Cometics. I was looking at the last set I used and it just makes me uncomfortable to see how they are assembled/designed. I have to admit I feel more comfortable with the felpro 9441 pt and coppers. The copper SCE has a built in o ring and coolant passage seals. The felpro has a sealed fire ring. Simple design. I can see felpros down to 11.0s past that coppers.
 
What are your thoughts on something like a plate type system built into a plenum spacer? An alky distribution plate that acts as a spacer. A hollow spacer with a nozzle pointed at each intake runner and a simple connection at the front or back?

That is exactly what I built for my car. Here are a few pics of the plate. This is just a prototype, though it works great. I need to make a few changes to the design. THe nozzles have a .015" hole on the side of the nozzle. I aimed the holes down each runner.

Maybe drill the EGR tower to supply methanol to each port. Then it could also spray into the exhaust ports to act as a flame thrower to spool the turbo.............Maybe I better quit thinking........

Use piston squirters to spray alcohol. Control volume with NOS jets. Still have to use a methanol compatable Nitrous solonoid. Getting easier as I type. <<grin>>
 
Nice work as always Ken! My composite 1/2" spacer might get some mods this winter.....:)

I highly doubt this trend has anything to do with the gaskets. I have blown past multiple sets of RJC's, even tore up a few. I guess we will see what my Cometics look like next. The common factor to all these problems seems to be the meth. I had replaced my knock sensor the first time this happened (ME-R,ported irons,SMC). I even torqued and heat cycled in 5ft lb increments, a tad overkill.....

well back in the "day" lots of guys ran nitrous :biggrin: NOS started off with the plenum tube kit. Then a while later came out with a "six pack" (6 nozzles in the plenum) . I tried it an blew a headgasket 1st time down the track with it. Kenny D was into this deep in 86/87. I went back to the "tube" shortly thereafter per Kennys advise :biggrin: DAMMM that was fun back then !! Good luck with the direct inj. Keep us updated.
..ok back to the thread. All of you guys having problems.. are ya all using a FAST in it :confused: We have used Cometics on all sorts of surfaces with no problems on chip cars. BUT we only run TSM legal boost :p
 
I have very good luck with cometics when everything is right. But one little problem and you end up with this!!!

The 5 ftlbs was just one of many ways to try and get an even clamp on the heads, usually every 10 to 20 ft lbs. I should be removing my heads Saturday night to compare head gaskets....:biggrin:
 
Anyone have any other ideas or theories? Been down this road too many times.
Is there anyone running 130+ in the quarter with pump gas/alky with reliable results?

20k + miles on the motor . Hasn't missed a beat!! Have a new motor in her car now with about 8k on it. Motor sitting in the Mazda right now also has cometics.. Both NO problems BUT the Mazda has only been driven up an down the street :p Oh will be taking the 20k motor apart an checking eveything before it goes back in the Mazda to stay. The motor was used by another guy for a few months an he ran high 10s with it at low boost. good luck tryin to figure it out.. Has me scratching my head thinkin of what you guys can be doin . :redface:

Cometics work great as long as the heads / block are like glass. Put oil on heads and block, set heads on without pins or studs. If you can pick the head straite up, you got problems. If you have to slide it off the side your good to go. I have not blown a head gasket in years due to having the heads and block lapped.
 
That is my plan... the heads and block were prepped for Cometics, but no matter.....

Pretty sure that can be fixed with Duct Tape.

What kind of noise was heard when that let go?

No noise, just the boost gauge fluttering, then coolant spraying out of my overflow.
 
Quick question for everyone running cometics:
Are you installing them dry or prepped up with copper spray or something similiar. Are you experiencing a lot of failures?
 
Mine were installed with Hylomar sprayed between layers, rivets removed. No leaks after coolant tabs were used ofr a few days.

we have used them both ways . Have also reused them just spraying the copper spray on both sides (Have never taken rivets out to do each one.) Also have had different finishes on the block an heads. NO FAILURES :cool: I have no idea how these guys are blowing them with NO KNOCK.
